Home entertaining is becoming more frequent, but hosts are changing how they serve food, organize space, and keep gatherings relaxed.
1. Buffets Are Beating Formal Dinners
A 2026 at-home entertaining survey found 51% of Americans prefer self-serve or buffet-style food, compared with 35% who prefer sit-down meals.
The format lets guests serve themselves and gives hosts less pressure to coordinate every course.
2. Guests Are Bringing More of the Food
Hosts are increasingly sharing the workload rather than preparing everything themselves.
The same survey found 26% of hosts usually have guests provide about half the food, while another 7% rely on guests for most of it.
3. Casual Gatherings Are Growing
In the 2026 survey, 57% of Americans had hosted a casual gathering such as a movie night or sports party during the previous year, up from 47% in the prior survey.
That shift suggests entertaining is becoming less tied to formal occasions.
4. The Atmosphere Matters More
Food is not the only focus. 61% of respondents said themes were at least somewhat important when hosting, while 38% said they usually or always purchase items to create a particular aesthetic.
Lighting, table settings, music, and décor are becoming part of the experience.
5. Cleanup Is the Biggest Problem
The biggest challenge for hosts is not choosing a menu.
31% identified cleanup as the hardest part of entertaining, ahead of preparing everything simultaneously at 22% and cooking at 15%.
That helps explain the popularity of buffets, disposable serving products, and simpler menus.
6. AI Is Entering the Planning Process
Hosting is even becoming an AI-assisted activity.
The survey found 16% of Americans would use AI tools such as chatbots when planning an at-home gathering, alongside 36% using social media and 26% using websites or digital tools.
