Instead of leaving coffee machines, blenders and toasters on the counter, homeowners are building them into cabinets and hiding them behind doors. Houzz found searches for appliance garages jumped 453% in the UK in early 2026, suggesting this once-old-fashioned idea is having a serious comeback.
A Dedicated Reading Nook
A chair in the corner is becoming an intentional little retreat, complete with built-in shelving, lighting and a place to disappear with a book. Houzz searches for alcove bookcases rose 8.5 times in its 2026 data, while searches for small libraries jumped 317%.
A Home Wellness Room
The home gym is getting more specific. Instead of one room filled with exercise equipment, homeowners are carving out spaces for meditation, stretching, sauna use or simply switching off. Houzz reported searches for meditation rooms rose more than 4 times in 2026.
A Dedicated Drink Station
Coffee bars and kitchen beverage stations are moving beyond the basic coffee maker. Think a separate counter for espresso, tea, sparkling water or cocktail prep. In Houzz’s U.S. kitchen research, 24% of renovating homeowners added beverage stations.
A Room Designed to Be Tech-Free
One of the strangest new luxuries is deliberately removing technology. High-end designers are reporting demand for “dumb bedrooms” without visible screens or connected gadgets, turning disconnection itself into a premium feature.
A Hidden Prep Kitchen
The kitchen people see isn’t necessarily the kitchen doing all the work. Butler’s pantries and prep kitchens let homeowners hide appliances, food prep and mess behind another door. Houzz found 76% of renovating homeowners added some type of specialty built-in feature in its 2026 U.S. kitchen study.
