Deciding to quit the gym wasn’t an overnight decision for me but rather more of a slow realization that the cons outweighed the pros. Don’t get me wrong—gyms are great for a lot of people. But over time, it just wasn’t the right fit for me anymore. Here are ten reasons why I hung up my gym towel for good.

Cost Became Prohibitive

The monthly cost for the privilege of using a treadmill & some weights is quite excessive. When you add in those extra fees for special classes or personal training, the numbers stopped making sense to me. There are plenty of free or cheaper ways to stay fit! You don’t have to commit to a hefty gym membership fee every month.
Overcrowding Made Workouts Stressful

One of the worst experiences was getting ready for a solid workout, only to spend half my time waiting for machines or traipsing through a sea of people. It was my reality more often than not! Trying to find a little corner to do my thing became a workout in itself and it made the whole experience feel more frustrating than it needed to be.

Commute Time Added Up

My gym wasn’t next door and that made getting there a mission. When I really thought about how much time I was spending traveling to & from the gym, it seemed like a waste. That travel time was eating into my day. I could spend it doing more exercise—or the things I genuinely enjoy!
I Discovered Outdoor Activities

Being outside beats the feeling of a gym. Once I started hiking and running in the great outdoors, I never looked back because it gave me a chance to have a good workout while soaking up some vitamin D. Better yet, I could enjoy the beauty of everything around me—you don’t get that from a gym.
Home Workouts Became More Appealing

There are so many online fitness classes & affordable equipment options available that I decided to create a mini-gym at home. After all, I had the convenience of being able to roll out of bed and start my workout without having to go anywhere! I could also blast my own music and wear whatever I wanted. Those are big wins in my book!
Hygiene Concerns

Let’s be honest—gyms get quite gross. No matter how hard the staff tried to keep things clean, the thought of sharing equipment with hundreds of others started to gross me out. I didn’t want to catch a cold (or worse) because someone didn’t wipe down a machine properly—I’d rather stay fit & healthy at home.
Lack of Personalized Attention

I realized I was on my own with figuring out what to do at the gym. Sure, personal trainers are an option—but they’re an extra expense I didn’t want to pay. At the gym, I felt lost with all the equipment and it made me question if I was really getting the most out of my gym time. I decided to personalize my workouts in my own mini-gym.
Social Anxiety

The gym is an intimidating place and especially for newbies. Feeling like you’re being watched or judged while you work out isn’t fun & I started to dread going because of the anxiety it caused me. That’s the opposite of what exercise is supposed to do—it really wasn’t a comfortable space for me.
Found More Rounded Approaches to Fitness

Eventually, I got into yoga & Pilates, which I could do at home or in smaller, more focused studios. These practices gave me as many physical benefits as they did mental and emotional ones too. Such a rounded approach to fitness really appealed to me, way beyond just lifting weights or running on a treadmill.
Desire for Flexibility in My Routine

My life doesn’t always fit into a schedule so I wanted the flexibility to work out whenever and however I wanted. As such, being tied to a gym’s hours and location didn’t work for me anymore—my fitness routine should fit into my life a lot more easily. And not the other way around!
