Turning 60 makes you see the world differently – and yourself. It’s like flipping a switch and no longer worrying about the nitty gritty and begin to worry about what’s truly important. Most of the things I used to say just don’t fit anymore. They were restrictive, or perhaps things I said to myself to be careful. But now? Well, I see things very differently. Life’s too short to be afraid or locked in habits. Here are some things I stopped saying after 60 and the better, more positive things I’ve started saying instead.

“I’m Too Old For That”

What I Say Now: “Why Not Give It A Try?”
I used to avoid exploring new things because I believed they were for youngsters. Dancing, learning a new language or even experimenting with technology – seemed like they weren’t “my thing” anymore. But then I thought – who sets the rules? If it interests me or excites me — why not? There’s too little time in this world to restrict yourself simply because you’re older.
“I Don’t Have Time For This”

What I Say Now: “Let Me Make Time For What Matters”
I used to brush things off because I was busy — But busy doing what? I began spending my time differently after 60. Now I try to do things that are more important – spend time with loved ones, indulge in my hobbies & take care of myself. The reality is we all have time for what we care about.

“That’s Just The Way I Am”

What I Say Now: “I’m Open To Change”
This was a hard habit to break. I used to think that at my age, I was set in my ways. But guess what? Change is not just for the youth. I’ve also discovered that trying new things, learning from others & a willingness to adapt has made life so much more fun.
“I Can Do It All Myself”

What I Say Now: “Can You Help Me With This?”
I’d assumed that asking for help was a sign of weakness for years. But I’ve learnt otherwise. When you let someone help, not only does it make your life easier, but it builds connections too. Whether it’s grandkids showing me how to code, or a neighbor delivering groceries, it’s nice to make connection.
“I Should’ve Done This Years Ago”

What I Say Now: “I’m Glad I’m Doing It Now”
It’s tempting to think “If only I’d started sooner.” But regret is wasted energy. Rather, I work on how I’m doing it now and that’s enough. Be it travel, a new hobby or a chance to see an old friend — the timing is perfect because it’s happening.
“I Can’t Keep Up With All This Technology”

What I Say Now: “Show Me How This Works”
Technology is scary but I have learned that trying to push it away doesn’t help. Instead, I ask questions and take one step at a time. It’s not as scary as I thought, whether it’s how to video call my family or how to just use an app. And, you know, everybody is willing to help you out when you ask.
“What Will People Think?”

What I Say Now: “Does It Make Me Happy?”
This one used to stop me from doing so much. But the older I get, the more I find that people’s opinions don’t really count. If I feel good when I’m in that neon shirt, dancing at a party or not wanting to do something – then so be it. Life is more fun when you’re no longer concerned with what other people think.
“I’m Not As Young As I Used To Be”

What I Say Now: “I’m As Young As I Feel”
I do have some more aches and pains, but that doesn’t mean I can’t live. I do what I can — be it a daily walk, yoga or just trying to match my grandkids’ energy. To be young-hearted is about how you feel — not how old you are.
“I Don’t Need Anything Else”

What I Say Now: “I’d Love To Explore This”
I used to just take what’s given to me and just say “I got all I need.” Now I realize that life is fun when you stay curious. Whether it’s cooking a new recipe, visiting a new place, or learning a new pastime I never thought I would, something new always awaits.
