13 Joyful Routines I’ve Established in My 60s That Brighten My Days

Hitting my 60 has been like discovering a whole new dimension of life. Sure, there are more aches and wrinkles, but also this great sense of freedom. I’ve stopped feeling like I need to rush or show anything to anyone. So instead, I’ve taken pleasure in small things – in habits that simply make the day seem a little brighter and fuller. These are not grand, life-changing habits but they’ve brought so much peace and joy into my life. Let me tell you what little things have been making my days just a little bit better.

Starting the Day with Gratitude

Every morning, I sit down with my coffee or tea and think about three things I’m grateful for. It could be as big as my family or as small as sunlight hitting the kitchen window. Once I turn my attention towards the positive things, the rest of the day feels much better.

Enjoying a Morning Walk

There is something magical about going for a morning walk. The earth is still, the air fresh and I feel part of the natural world. It’s time for me to stretch and clear my mind, whether I’m out in a park or around my neighborhood.

Rediscovering Old Hobbies

I’ve picked up some old hobbies that I haven’t touched in years. Gardening has become my therapy, and painting, even if it’s just for fun, lets me express myself. It’s like getting to see a friend you knew and always made you laugh.

Connecting with Loved Ones

I have made it a point to call or visit the people that matter most. Whether it’s a quick call to my kids, a cup of coffee with a friend, or a thoughtful message, being connected keeps me grounded and content.

Learning Something New

You are never too old to try something new, right? I’ve learned to make bread, and I’ve tried to paint with watercolors. It’s not about being perfect but about enjoying the process and being a little proud when I learn something new.

Daily Stretching or Yoga

My mornings are not complete without a few stretches or a little yoga. It’s nothing fancy, but enough to relax my muscles and make my body feel good. I like to give myself a little present every day.

Practicing Mindfulness

Just sitting for 10 minutes, paying attention to my breath, has been life changing. It makes me stay calm and pay attention to the small things, such as how the trees move in the breeze or how good my cup of tea smells.

Listening to Music or Podcasts

On some days, I turn up my favorite 70s music and dance around the kitchen. Other days, I listen to a travel or personal development podcast. It’s an easy way to make boring chores like laundry or cleaning seem pleasurable.

Journaling My Thoughts

I’ve started taking notes at the end of each day. It’s nothing big — a couple of sentences about how I was happy, or what I learned, or what I’m looking forward to. It is good to have it out of my mind and onto paper.

Volunteering in the Community

Giving back has become a big part of my life. If I can volunteer at a local food bank or coach young people, it gives me meaning and makes me feel like I’m doing something good.

Savoring a Good Book or Movie

You can’t beat curling up with a good book or a well-done movie at the end of the day.  It’s my way to unwind and escape for a little while – plus, it’s just plain fun.

Indulging in a Favorite Treat

I no longer feel guilty about little indulgences. A piece of cake, a scoop of frozen yogurt or simply my favorite chocolate bar makes the week memorable. It’s not life if you don’t treat yourself to the little things! Just remember to clear it with your doctor first.

Reflecting on the Day Before Bed

Just before I fall asleep, I take a moment to think about what went well that day – it might be a good conversation, a task I completed, or the way the sunset looked. Ending the day on a positive note makes me look forward to the next day.
