Daydreaming is a habit that many of us can identify with. That’s when the mind flits off and sends you far from where you are now. It’s a way of getting out of the daily routine – Some people daydream to stimulate the creative juices and develop new perspectives, some daydream to help manage stress or boredom.
Such mental digressions can give us inspiration and inner contemplation and make life seem a little magical. Knowing the telltales of a daydreamer can help make this aspect of oneself welcome.

Frequent Mind Wandering

It’s perfectly normal for dreamers to be thinking of something else while talking or working. You might be talking to someone, and all of a sudden your mind goes to a holiday you wish you’d taken. This can be even in meetings where you miss important points because your brain is off-task. This can make it difficult to remain present.
Vivid Imagination

You are a daydreamer if you create elaborate narratives or map out destinations on your mind’s eye. And your imagination will give you the impression that you are living it. This is fun and interesting, and it lets you go out into your world at any time. There is no limit to what you can do with your brain.

Difficulty Focusing

For a dreamer, paying attention is difficult. If it is dull and repetitive work then your thoughts will wander off. Or you are too distracted thinking about what to eat or go see instead of completing your to-do list. This can be annoying especially as deadlines get close. Yet, with this special way of thinking, when you can concentrate, new thoughts come to you.
Creative Thinking

As daydreamers, we like to find unique solutions to issues. The imagination of your brain teaches you to step out of the box. When the situation demands it, you might suggest things no one else would. It also extends to your creative work and hobbies or projects, in which you can put yourself out there in creative ways. Accepting this can create new doors of opportunity.
Losing Track of Time

And while you are dreaming, the hours can pass as quickly as you think. You may be distracted by your thoughts and hours pass without you knowing it. This is because your brain is so busy pretending that the clock of the real world has vanished. Therefore, you may forget about tasks or obligations while dreaming.
Escaping Reality

For us daydreamers, it is a welcome break from the demands of daily life. You can get some relief from envisioning a new location or environment when you are in a stressful state or a high stress level. You give yourself an emotional vacation, so you can take a little break from your stresses and go into something nice or fun for a while.
Strong Emotional Responses

Daydreams bring on intense feelings. You may be smiling, nostalgic or lamenting as you fantasise. And those emotions can render your fantasies seem like reality. Your imagination gets involved so deeply in your feelings, it gives depth to your projects.
Frequent Distractions

‘You tend to become preoccupied with yourself. Just an idea, or a glimmer of a thought, can turn into a daydream in itself, distracting you from what you were doing. This would mean that you can start losing track of time or forgetting what you were supposed to be doing because your brain keeps getting distracted with something new.
Interest in Fiction

When you read fiction it helps you to create ideas for yourself. You can get lost in the plot or just visualize how you would react in those moments. This passion for narrative empowers you to tell your own narratives, either through text, image, or other medium.
Social Situations

Perhaps daydreamers are less at home in the real world than they are in the imaginary. You may also get stuck thinking about conversations or hypotheticals instead of being present with others. Social situations are therefore sometimes overwhelming. But you also have an abundance of inner life that is very satisfying. It’s good in social settings to find a middle ground between your fantasies and your thoughts.
Planning and Organizing

You might also think ahead when daydreaming. You could dream of how things will turn out, or visualize intentions and ambitions. It’s a form of thinking that is effective, making you feel more prepared. That’s a bit like practicing for tomorrow in your brain.
Difficulty Disconnecting

For daydreamers, it’s not easy to shut the mind off when you have to focus. This makes it difficult to fall asleep or focus on important work. Then your mind might continue to wander into interesting thoughts or situations and it becomes hard to keep it focused. Understanding how to handle this can assist with integrating daydreaming into everyday tasks.
Heightened Sensory Perception

People with daydreams can have an overly keen sense of sight, hearing and smell. In a dream you may recall a scent or glimpse colour more clearly. That increased consciousness can make dreams feel more visceral and tangible. But that can also mean that you are distracted in real life by sensory information, and that this can impact attention.
