12 Ways Climate Change is Already Altering the World’s Most Iconic Landmarks

Climate change is a widely recognized problem, with impacts in almost every facet of our lives — from the weather we experience to rising sea levels. Climate change is even altering invaluable world sites such as Machu Picchu in Peru and the The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, leading to weakening structures and a decline in tourism.

In this list, we explore 12 ways climate change is transforming some of the most iconic places on Earth.

The Great Wall of China is one of the greatest human-made structures in history, but its very existence may be endangered by climate change. Rainfall and the floods are both taking their toll on some sections of it. If water gets into it, the bricks will crack and break down. It is not simply a loss of a historical place but an impact on the local environment — as well the communities surrounding this area which depend on tourism. It is already a challenge to keep this ancient wall standing at all.

The Great Barrier Reef is an incredible underwater utopia that has caught the eye of marine enthusiasts for 100s of years; however, now it is facing a serious issue due to the rising sea temperatures.

If the water stays hot for too long, corals begin to eject the tiny algae that live in their tissues. This process is called coral bleaching, which makes the corals white and weak. These corals have a higher chance of dying, having disastrous impacts on the rest of marine life that depends on them. It is important to protect this ecosystem that supports millions of marine life.

Patagonia has some of the most beautiful glaciers in the world, but they are melting at an incredible rate. As global temperatures rise, the glaciers shrink – altering many of the beautiful environments that the world depends on. The melting ice can raise sea levels, influencing coastal communities half a world apart. Some of the animals who depend on these glaciers, like penguins and seals, are also struggling due to habitat loss.

Flooding of Venice

A place like no other, with its meandering canals and old buildings, is Venice. Yet the island is also more vulnerable to climate change than almost anywhere on Earth. More frequent floods are endangering the city – due to rising sea levels and stronger storms. Due to this flooding, centuries old architecture is being damaged – not to mention the danger to those who reside there. Venice may be underwater soon unless proper action is taken.

On Liberty Island, the statue of Liberty is under threat due to rising water levels. Additionally, increased storm activity might lead to the statue being closed from public accessibility in the upcoming years. Maintaining a piece of this iconic history will require intense effort from the authorities.

Deterioration of Machu Picchu

A historical wonder that was developed by the Incan civilization, the ancient city of Machu Picchu is nestled hundreds of meters above sea level in the Andes Mountains — it is now threatened by climate change too. More frequent landslides caused by increased rainfall, can damage the stone constructions of Machu Picchu. Fire season and floods are also getting more frequent in the area. Millions of tourists visit this site every year, so it has to be maintained constantly.

The Pyramids of Giza are among the most recognizable landmarks in all the world, but also some of the most vulnerable to climate change. The limestone of the pyramids weaken over time and break apart — and this wear and tear can be worsened by increasing frequency of dust storms. The protection of the pyramids is important not only for Egypt but also for the whole world heritage. Without protection, these ancient wonders may face irreparable harm.

Stonehenge is an important archaeological site which draws millions of visitors every year. Yet climate change is transforming the landscape around it — powerful rains and frequent thawing of the stones in winter are causing erosion and vegetation changes. To save Stonehenge, we need to address these environmental changes and ensure this ancient monument remains preserved for our descendants to explore.

The Taj Mahal – a beautiful monument to love that is being threatened by pollution and climate change. The marble of the palace tends to turn yellow as it gets exposed to air pollution and acid rain. Of course, something as detailed and beautiful as the Taj Mahal needs care and protection. This masterpiece should be kept safe so that people from all over the world can continue to be inspired by it for generations to come.

Even the Eiffel Tower, the symbol of Paris, is affected by climate change. Over time, metal of this tower expands with rising temperatures – creating maintenance problems or structural issues in the future. The tower is also visibly rusting and cracking in places. It’s important to recognize when repairs or adjustments are needed for the tower, so that it continues being one of the most cherished landmarks for many years.

The Northern Lights, specifically known as Aurora Borealis, is a mystical experience for numerous people. The lights rely on special atmospheric conditions, and the game changes with changing weather. As temperatures climb and pollution worsens, those viewing opportunities are likely to dwindle. Keeping the environment clean can prevent this magical feeling from being lost.

The Amazon Rainforest is an essential part of our world – it is effectively the lungs of Earth. But climate change – on top of deforestation – is wreaking havoc with that ecosystem. This can involve habitat loss for many species with changes in temperature and rainfall patterns threatening biodiversity. Keeping the Amazon alive is vital for all of those creatures, as well as, to keep our planet healthy.
