13 Reboots That Should Have Never Happened

Occasionally, a new spin on an old movie comes alive and we feel like there is something missing in it. I remember when they even announced the new all-female Ghostbusters film. I was thrilled because woo-hoo — another paranormal film was coming and I was waiting to see how it might duplicate the magic of the original movie. But, when it was out in the theaters, none of that felt earned. It just did not have the same charm and humor that made the first movie a classic.

In this list – I’ll share with you 13 such reboots that should have never been made.

Fantastic Four (2015)

Marvel’s first family of superheroes got two big screen attempts in 2005 and 2007. Fantastic Four (2015) tried to make the series feel more realistic, but that just led to confusing storytelling and poor execution. It was a lame story packed to the brim with just plain & bad characters. Honestly, it was a more of a sleazy attempt at cashing in on old fashioned nostalgia rather than genuine portrayal of comic book heroes.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was supposed to be a whimsical retelling of Roald Dahl’s beloved story. The Gene Wilder classic (1971), including the magic and wonder of the chocolate factory, has always been one of my favorite movies for as long as I can remember from when I was a kid. Burton’s looked good, but it was a little too black for its own boots and Johnny Depp playing Wonka was just plain & weird.

Ghostbusters (2016)

The original Ghostbusters (1984) movie which featured a group of paranormal researchers ghost hunting in New York City – was a comedic take on ghost hunting and otherworldly adventures. In its reboot released in 2016, there was a fresh all-female cast – but it fell so short. The jokes did not land and the majority of fans agreed that the characters lacked chemistry. The reboot played less like a new idea and more as an oversight.

The Mummy (2017)

The original Mummy trilogy (1999-2008) was a delightful mix of action-adventure with some real quirk, led by Brendan Fraser as the handsome explorer. That reboot wanted to recapture the fun but did so cynically poorly for an attempt at launching a new monster universe. Its plot was muddled, and its action was overcooked — a take that left fans of the original underwhelmed.

The Karate Kid (2010)

The first Karate Kid (1984) was about a young kid bullied at school who is saved by Mr. Miyagi, (the maintenance man of his mom’s apartment complex) who teaches him martial arts. While Jaden Smith is the lead in this reboot, some fans felt it was a far cry from capturing any of the charm or emotional depth as its predecessor. The original definitely had some more fun to it rather than this one.

Ben-Hur (2016)

The first Ben-Hur (1959) is an epic about betrayal, revenge and the famous chariot race. The reboot tried to bring back that majestic-ness – but it didn’t have heart like its classic counterpart. Ben-Hur (2016), which was notable for its stylized visuals, disappointed many fans who felt that it would have made a far better DC movie than what they got with the reboot.

Total Recall (2012)

The 1990 film was a futuristic action thriller based on an astronaut who tries to uncover his past, and goes into battle with the oppressive forces of a corrupt government. Total Recall (2012) was supposed to be a more realistic reboot, but it really just ended up dull. The plot lacked the twists that made the original so entertaining and as a result came off feeling like it overused special effects, which had audiences yearning for the classic film instead.

Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

A Nightmare in Elm Street (1984) introduced Freddy Krueger, an elderly man with a razor-fingered glove that haunted dreams of teenagers. There was an attempt to reboot this horror franchise with 2010’s Nightmare on Elm Street, and it turned out poorly. The horror was missing, and the fans felt like that the reboot wasn’t capturing the fear and intensity of the original movies.

Dumb and Dumber To (2014)

Jim Carrey

This classic comedy focused on a pair of friends (Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels) bumbling their way through life. Its followup, however, attempted to recapture the enjoyment of that series — with far too much emphasis on nostalgia and immature humor. It came as a rude shock to a lot of fans who believed that the first film was clever and charming.

The Pink Panther (2006)

Steve Martin

Peter Sellers portrayed the bumbling detective in 1963’s The Pink Panther and its reboot was made to revive the franchise but failed. Fans were a little disappointed since Steve Martin did not manage to hold the charm and wit of Clouseau from the original.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

The 1981 original Clash of the Titans was a classic adventure that took Greek mythology and delivered it through memorable characters, action, and effects. Clash of the Titans (2010) was a poor effort to bring the story into this century where special effects stomped all over characterization. Original fans said that it failed to take them on the new adventures and excitement they had expected.

Point Break (2015)

In Point Break (1991) movie, a young undercover cop spies on a band of thrill-seeking surfers that may be bank robbers. The idea of this reboot was to re-imagine this incredibly popular action movie, but it fell flat. Few fans liked the follow-up, finding it bereft of the original’s thrills and character depth. It didn’t feel very much like a reboot to me; rather more of a half-imitation.

The Lion King (2019)

The Lion King (1994) was such a classic animated movie full of beautiful music and an emotional tale. The 2019 live-action remake tried to be realistic without delving into those emotions. Fans did not get the same emotion and it left a lot of people coming out of the theater — feeling like they missed how they loved the Lion King movie as a kid.
