Now it’s time for something that’ll get your brain into gear! Philosophy involves the mysteries we all think about from time to time, like the meaning of life & why we dream. Anybody can ask those questions since philosophy isn’t just for people in togas. Here are eleven classic philosophical questions that we’re still unsure about today. It really doesn’t matter if we don’t have the answers to these questions, nor if we’ll ever find them. Really it’s fun to simply ask!

What Is the Meaning of Life?

Let’s start with the biggest question—why are we all here? Some people think the goal is to find happiness while others say it’s serving a bigger purpose. There are also those who believe the important part is the journey rather than the destination. Either way, this question keeps us up at night. It also makes for some rather interesting conversations because really, who hasn’t talked about the meaning of life with loved ones before?
Can We Ever Know Anything for Certain?

Can we really be sure about anything? Just think about it—everything we know comes from our senses or being taught by others. But what if our senses aren’t always reliable? Such a question makes us rethink the idea of what’s real & what’s just our perception. In fact, this question is enough to make us wonder if we take the world around us for granted.

What Is Reality?

Speaking of questioning things, what if what we see and feel isn’t the real deal? According to some philosophers, life is just a big illusion & there could be something more out there. Essentially, it’s like asking if the blue you see is the same blue I see. Now that’s trippy! Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to work out what’s truly real and what’s just a trick of the mind.
Do We Have Free Will?

Another hot topic is whether we are the masters of our destiny or if everything is already decided for us. For example, whenever you choose chocolate ice cream over vanilla, is that really your choice? Or was it bound to happen? We just don’t know. Whatever the answer, this really explores the idea of fate and whether we’re really in control of our lives.
What Is the Best Way to Live?

We’ve all had those moments where we wonder what actually makes a life well-lived. To some, it involves being good, while others think it could be happiness. Or maybe it’s something else entirely! Everyone has their take on what makes life worth living but there is one thing we can agree on. You have to find what rings true for you.
Is There a God?

The question of whether there’s a higher power has been fueling debates & shaping lives for millennia. Naturally, we’ve built entire cultures around trying to find the answer. Beyond mere religion, this question involves looking for something bigger than ourselves and trying to make sense of the mysteries of the universe. However, we probably won’t ever find the answer—it’s still nice to speculate, though!
What Is Consciousness?

Just what is it that makes you, you? Consciousness involves your inner voice, the thing that lets you enjoy a sunset or savor a piece of chocolate cake. Naturally, it’s a puzzle that has engaged scientists & philosophers alike for centuries as they try to figure out where it comes from & what it means to be aware. It could be a soul or it could be something else entirely.
What’s Good and What’s Evil?

Here’s a question that’s as relevant today as it was a thousand years ago. What makes something good or bad? However, we’re not talking about laws or even religion here. Rather, it’s that gut feeling of right and wrong—just where does that come from? It’s a kind of question that gets us thinking about morality and how we decide what’s acceptable & what’s not. Is there anyone who can tell us definitively?
Is There Life After Death?

Does anybody know what happens after we take our last breath? Different cultures and religions have their own answers including heaven and hell, as well as reincarnation. But perhaps the most scary idea is nothing at all. The question is all about the mystery of what comes next. As such, it’s something we’ll never know until it happens to us. Maybe that’s for the best.
What Is Beauty?

Even our ideas of beauty are hard to pin down, whether that’s a painting, a song or a sunset. Yes, we know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder—but how does it get there? There’s not a universal standard for what’s beautiful. How much of our sense of beauty comes from our environment and how much of it is us ourselves? How do we even know what beautiful things are?
What Is Justice?

Last but not least, we need to talk about fairness. Everyone has an idea of what’s fair and what’s not, whether that’s during playground squabbles or in the highest courts in the land. But figuring out what justice really means is never going to be easy. It involves balancing scales & making sure everyone gets what they deserve, whatever that may be. Who can decide what justice is, really?
