Learning Through Apprenticeship

Way back when, learning a trade or skill from a family member was normal. Beyond mastering a craft, you’d learn to build a strong work ethic and take pride in your accomplishments. Getting kids involved in projects (like fixing a bike or gardening) gives them hands-on experience that books and screens just can’t replicate. They learn by doing and value the process as much as the result!

Using Manners Books

Good manners never go out of style, although the way we teach them has changed a bit. In the past, they used manners books to teach kids about etiquette and we could still use them today. They’d help kids understand social situations with confidence. Rather than being stuffy or formal, they’d understand how to be kind and considerate in any setting.

Setting Consistent Bedtimes

Getting kids to stick to a regular bedtime was far easier before because there were fewer distractions. These days,  it involves more than making sure they’re not zombies in the morning. Instead, it teaches them why a good night’s sleep matters and how it fits into a healthy lifestyle. Get your kids used to going to bed at the same time! They’ll feel more secure and get the hang of sticking to a schedule afterward. That’s certainly important when they’re older.

Teaching the Importance of Honesty

Being honest never goes out of style and it’s something kids need to catch onto early. When you talk with them about why being truthful is important, don’t lecture them—rather, give them tools for life. They’ll learn that being honest builds trust and helps them make the right calls. Better yet, they’ll understand how honesty affects how others see them.

Encouraging Responsibility Through Chores

Of course, giving kids chores keeps your house tidy and it was the standard in the past. But it also teaches them how valuable their help is—at home & beyond. When they’re responsible for tasks, they’ll pick up on what it means to be part of a team and take pride in their work. Don’t you want your kids to know what it means to be grown-up and dependable?

Fostering Independence with Guidance

Try letting kids make their own choices so they can become their own person—within reason, though. You don’t need to give them as much freedom as they did in the past! Yes, you’re there to guide them but it’s their show. They’ll get to think things through and make decisions before seeing what happens. In doing so, you’ll teach them to trust themselves and show them you trust them too. Then, they’ll be ready for the bigger choices down the road.

Teaching Respect for Others

It’s no secret that kids have a different understanding of respect than those in the past. Yet they still need to know how important it is to respect others because it allows them to understand & value everyone’s differences. Show them respect yourself then talk about why it matters. If you do this, you’re helping your kids build strong, positive relationships with all kinds of people throughout their lives. Now that’s certainly worth something.

Encouraging Perseverance in the Face of Challenges

Life’s going to be difficult and parents from the past knew that better than anyone, so they’d teach their kids not to bail at the first sign of trouble. You can do the same! When your kids hear about people who’ve faced tough times and made it through, it becomes a kind of inspiration for them. What you’re doing is showing them that sticking with it, even when it’s hard, is worth it.

Modeling and Discussing Healthy Communication

Since they didn’t have the technology we do today, parents used to teach their kids that good conversations are important to any solid relationship. We can do the same today by showing kids how it’s done. Let them know the power of really listening, working through disagreements without losing your cool, as well as saying what you mean in a way that’s kind. This is how they learn to express themselves.

Prioritizing Family Time

It was certainly easier to hang out together as a family in the past, although it’s not impossible today. You need this time together because it’s the glue that binds you. Whether it’s dinner or games, family time is your chance to connect & make those memories that last. It doesn’t matter what’s happening—family time is non-negotiable.

Encouraging Thoughtful Decision-Making

Parents used to help their kids understand how to make smart choices by giving them more independence. Honestly, it’s one of the best gifts you can give them. Try guiding them to look at their options and then think about what might happen before going with what feels right. Yes, it takes patience. But how else will they learn to trust their gut and feel good about the choices they make?
