8 things angels carry in the Bible

Angels in the Bible carry far more than harps, and some of the objects mentioned in Scripture might surprise you.

Flaming sword

One of the first references to angelic beings bearing a weapon can be found in Genesis 3:24. Upon driving Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden, God placed cherubim and a flaming sword that blazed forth in every direction at the east of the garden to keep watch over the way to the Tree of Life.

Genesis 3:24 never directly states that the cherubim were holding the sword. Despite this, the flaming sword became one of the most iconic symbols of angels.

Golden censers

Revelation 8:3–5 describes an angel standing before the altar of heaven, with a golden censer. A censer is a container that holds fire for burning incense. This angel also takes incense mingled with the prayers of God’s people and presents it before God.

After this, he fills his censer with fire from the altar, and hurls it onto the earth. Thereafter follows thunder and lightning, and an earthquake.

Sharp sickles

In Revelation 14:17–19, an angel comes down from the heavenly temple wielding a sharp sickle. Another angel then instructs him to “grab the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine since it has ripened”.

He then harvests the grapes with his sharp sickle and throws them into the great winepress of God’s wrath. The scene symbolizes divine judgment and uses the familiar agricultural image of harvesting to represent the end of an age.

Golden bowls

Revelation 15:7 records that one of the four living creatures presented seven angels with seven golden bowls full of God’s wrath. They proceed to empty the bowls on the earth (Rev 16), unleashing subsequent judgments against creation: painful sores, blood-filled waters, utter darkness, etc.

The bowls are not ordinary containers but powerful symbols within John’s apocalyptic vision.

Trumpets

Seven angels receive seven trumpets in Revelation 8:2. When each angel blows his trumpet, something different happens: hail and fire mixed with blood, a mountain burned by fire is thrown into the sea, a star falls from heaven.

The trumpet blasts signal the various phases of God’s judgment upon the earth. Angels are commonly depicted with musical instruments, though these are usually for worship rather than signaling calamities.

A measuring reed

When an angel talks to John about measuring the New Jerusalem, its gates, and its walls in Revelation 21:15, he is holding a golden measuring reed. The measurements that are given reveal just how vast and perfectly proportioned each of the components of the city are. The measuring reed here is symbolizes order and divine design.

A little scroll

Revelation 10:1–2 speaks of an angel coming down from heaven clothed in cloud, rainbow upon his head, and his face like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. He has a little scroll in his hand, open. He sets one foot on the sea and the other on the earth and delivers a powerful message.

Later, John is told to take and swallow the scroll that is in the angel’s hand. It tastes sweet as honey in John’s mouth, but in his belly it turns bitter. This scroll symbolizes a message that God gives John to receive and proclaim.

A great chain

In Revelation 20:1–3, an angel comes down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He grabs the dragon, who is Satan, and ties him up for a thousand years and throws him in the pit. The chain symbolizes restraint. Here, we find one of the most direct biblical examples of an angel holding an instrument meant for enacting God’s judgment.
