15 fashion risks few take beyond 30

Fashion should be fun! At least that’s the mentality most people have when they’re young. In their teens and 20s, anything goes and the fashion world is their oyster. They take wild risks and then look back at the photos and think, “What was I thinking?!” But once a person hits their 30s, their preferences and priorities change, and some styles they used to follow just don’t work anymore. We asked some people what fashion risks they no longer take and their replies are as honest as they are hilarious.

When people are younger, ripped jeans make them feel edgy and cool. But when they get to be over 30, a lot of people start to feel like the look makes them look messy or even like they don’t try hard enough. Most people ditch them in favor of cleaner and more classic denim styles.

Crop tops everywhere

Crop tops are a lot of fun for concerts and festivals, but they don’t work for everyday life like they used to. Most people still have them in their wardrobe in their 30s but reserve them for specific occasions rather than wearing them casually all the time.

Sky-high stilettos

Sky-high heels look amazing but they can be torturous to walk in. After 30, most people value comfort and opt for stylish shoes that won’t leave them hobbling by the end of the night.

Extremely baggy pants

Baggy pants can be a cool trend but they can be a struggle to style without looking sloppy. Once they hit their 30s, most people prefer a more tailored fit that looks more refined.

Neon everything

From head to toe in neon is a bold move that most people are only willing to make when they’re younger. After 30, most people stick to using neon as more of an accent, like a gym top or an accessory. It’s still fun, but it’s not quite as loud a statement.

Super short shorts

Mini-shorts might make one feel carefree when they’re younger, but they might find they lose some of their appeal later on. When people hit 30, they often swap them for slightly longer shorts that are more versatile.

Logo overload

Big, flashy logos are exciting when someone is younger. After 30, many prefer understated branding or timeless pieces that don’t scream for attention. Quiet, classic styles start to feel more sophisticated.

Wild hair colors

Hair color can be fun to experiment with, and wild shades like pink, blue, and green are popular among younger people. As people get older, it becomes harder to maintain those more extreme dye jobs, as they can be expensive and time-consuming to keep up. Many switch to natural shades or soft highlights instead.

Super low-rise pants

Low-rise jeans and skirts are as flattering as they are notoriously uncomfortable to wear. Mid-rise and high-rise fits start to look and feel better on a body as a person hits 30. They are also more practical.

Statement hats indoors

Oversized floppy hats and dramatic fedoras are great style statements for someone in their 20s. After 30, most people leave them for vacations, festivals and costume parties instead.

Overly distressed t-shirts

Messy, torn or super-distressed t-shirts feel really rugged when someone’s younger. But after 30, most people start to prefer clean, well-cut tops that keep a casual look without appearing scruffy.

Head-to-toe animal print

Animal print shoes and a bag are totally fine. An animal print dress, tights, and a bag is taking it too far, something most people don’t do after 30. It can quickly go from being a cool trend to looking overwhelming.

Flashy costume jewelry

Chunky neon necklaces, layered bracelets, and oversized earrings feel really fun when in 20s. As time goes on, most people start to lean toward more classic jewelry that goes with almost everything.

Bodycon dresses are a go-to for nights out when people are younger. But by 30, most people switch to outfits that are equally flattering but a lot more comfortable to wear.

Wearing pajamas in public

Throwing on a shirt over your pajamas and heading to the store is carefree and fun when people are younger. But after 30, most people will still take the time to throw on a proper outfit, even if it’s just jeans and a hoodie.
