Some famous deaths have continued to captivate the nation’s imagination over the years, inspiring never-ending public speculation.
Marilyn Monroe
The official cause of death of the Hollywood icon was ruled a probable suicide by overdose of barbiturates in her Los Angeles home.
Yet inconsistencies with witness statements given by her housekeeper, missing police logbooks, and her personal relationships with both President John F. Kennedy and his brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, spawned years of theories about government involvement or conspiracy to cover up what had happened.
Natalie Wood
The West Side Story actress died after drowning off the shore of Catalina Island while on a weekend boating trip with her husband, Robert Wagner, and actor Christopher Walken.
The death was ruled accidental but officially reopened in 2011 when the captain of the boat confessed to investigators that he lied about a heated argument on the boat before she went missing. Her death certificate was amended to “drowning and other undetermined factors” in 2012 due to bruises on her body that could not be explained.
Tupac Shakur
After attending the high-profile boxing match between George Foreman and Oscar Denton in Las Vegas, Tupac was shot four times in a drive-by shooting on the Las Vegas Strip. For almost thirty years, detectives struggled to find witnesses who would cooperate with police and blamed gang violence and police corruption for not finding those responsible.
In 2023, Las Vegas police indicted Duane “Keffe D” Davis for setting up the drive-by, but questions still remain about whether there were more people involved and who else had motives to kill Tupac.
The Notorious B.I.G.
Christopher Wallace (Biggie Smalls) was killed six months later under eerily similar circumstances to Tupac. Wallace was shot at a red light after attending an industry party in Los Angeles.
The murder was ruled unsolved. Speculation on who shot him has varied from East Coast–West Coast rival rap music scenes to rogue corruption done by off-duty LAPD officers working for Death Row Records.
Bruce Lee
Legendary martial artist died suddenly in Hong Kong at age 32 from cerebral edema (brain swelling). The official coroner’s report listed the cause of death as being due to a hypersensitive allergic reaction to the prescription medication Equagesic, a painkiller.
But because of Lee’s superior physical health, researchers and fans have questioned his death for decades.
Kurt Cobain
Lead singer of Nirvana was discovered dead at his Seattle home from what was determined by police to be a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. He reportedly left a note beside his body indicating that he had committed suicide.
However, critics and private investigators cite extraordinarily high levels of heroin in Cobain’s system (likely incapacitating him from being able to aim the shotgun) and alleged irregularities with Cobain’s suicide note handwriting and fingerprinting process.
Brittany Murphy
The 32-year-old actress passed away at her home. The official cause of death listed by the coroner was pneumonia aggravated by anemia and the use of cold medications.
Strangely enough, her husband Simon Monjack died five months later in the same home, with the cause of death and manner of death listed as identical to hers. The coincidence of their deaths fueled many conspiracy theories, including possible poisonous mold in her home to allegations of heavy metal poisoning.
George Reeves
The star of TV’s Adventures of Superman actor George Reeves died from a gunshot wound to the head. It occurred in his upstairs bedroom while he was alone; downstairs, a party continued. Reeves’ death was quickly determined to be suicide by police who believed Reeves killed himself.
However, there was no gunpowder residue on Reeves’ hands. There were multiple bullet holes in his bedroom floor. Party guests downstairs waited many minutes before calling police after hearing the shot.
Bob Crane
He was found beaten to death with a heavy tripod in his Scottsdale, Arizona apartment. Crane was living out a secret life of recording pornographic videotapes.
His friend and video technician, John Henry Carpenter, was arrested and put on trial for murder in 1994 after blood and DNA were found inside of Carpenter’s rental vehicle. However, Carpenter was found innocent by a jury. The murder weapon has never been found and the murder remains officially unsolved.
Princess Diana
The official French investigation found Diana died because of chauffeur Henri Paul’s drunk and reckless high-speed flight from photographers in Paris.
However, questions still remain about claims made by Mohamed Al-Fayed that there was a conspiracy by secret services, why CCTV footage was missing from cameras along the route Diana took, and why there was a mystery white Fiat Uno that grazed the Mercedes before the crash.
Jimi Hendrix
The famous guitarist died of asphyxia after choking on his own vomit, as the result of an overdose of sleeping pills in London.
Ambiguities in the accounts of his girlfriend Monika Dannemann and statements by medical staff about the amount of wine discovered in his lungs fuelled media debate about whether his death was accidental, a suicide, or an overdose administered by someone else.
Brian Jones
The founder of The Rolling Stones was found motionless at the bottom of his swimming pool at Cotchford Farm.
While the cause of death was officially ruled a “death by misadventure” associated with drug and alcohol use, several witnesses and deathbed statements by contractors on site claimed there was a fight near the pool before he died, prompting fans to call for murder charges.
Elvis Presley
American singer Elvis Presley was discovered unconscious at his mansion in Graceland and pronounced dead on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. Although his death was deemed a heart failure at the time, it was later confirmed through an autopsy that he died of cardiovascular disease caused by high levels of prescription drugs.
His death stunned his worldwide fans and the mystery behind what really happened created conspiracy theories that are still discussed to this day.
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, at age 50, two months before he was scheduled to start his comeback series of concerts, This Is It, in London.
His death was ruled a homicide by Los Angeles prosecutors after cardiac arrest due to acute propofol and other sedative intoxication administered by Jackson’s personal physician Conrad Murray, who in 2011 was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson’s death. However, the events that transpired are still being questioned today.
