Somewhere around your late 30s, your definition of a “fun weekend” starts to change. Things that used to seem exciting or spontaneous become exhausting. And it’s not that you lose your sense of adventure as you get older; you just become much clearer on what is actually worth your time and energy.
Here are a few “fun” weekend plans that most people will admit stop being fun after the age of 38.

The All-Night Rave

Remember dancing till the sun came up, arms draped with hundreds of sweaty strangers? Well, your body now values actual sleep more than thumping bass lines. The excitement is not worth a week of recovery days anymore.
Hostel Hopping In Europe

Backpacking everywhere with shared dorm rooms used to be quite the adventure. You now want to sleep in your own private room with a proper bed and actual convenience. You now know comfort is better than extremely cheap.
Sleeping On A Friend’s Couch

Back then, an impromptu sleepover on an air mattress sounded like so much fun. These days, your neck and back will be screaming bloody murder the next morning.
Rough Tent Camping

Setting up a leaky tent and going to the bathroom outside sounds like not much fun at all. You would rather have a real roof, central heating, and plumbing. Comfort is definitely better than roughing it these days.
The Marathon Bar Crawl

Dragging yourself from one loud bar to another, screaming to be heard over terrible music, once seemed like a grand time. Now, you much prefer a quality drink or two and a proper conversation. The multi-day hangover just isn’t worth it anymore.
Random Extreme Sports

Spontaneously deciding to take part in aggressive sports seemed so fun and adventurous when you were young. Now, you start thinking of the inevitable sprains and breaks that come from overexertion. Your body also doesn’t recover as quickly these days.
Standing At Concerts

Your favorite band is playing and you’ll watch, but let’s be real for a second here. Your feet and back are not going to be very happy after hours of standing in a crowded room. A comfy reserved seat is actually heaven.
Eight Hour Road Trips

Driving for most of the day and evening seemed like a way to maximize your weekend in the past. The drive is now exhausting and more like a chore. Shorter trips or at least more breaks are definitely the way to go.
The All-Nighter

You used to stay up for an entire night to complete a project or binge-watch a series and think it was some kind of badge of honor. Well, now the next two days of your life will be essentially ruined by fatigue. Your body just doesn’t recover like it used to.
Completely Unplanned Trips

A 100% unreserved, no planning trip to an unknown location once felt like the height of adventure. The stress of racing to find a place to stay at the last minute will now easily overwhelm the actual adventure of it all. A little planning makes things so much more relaxing.
