Unnecessary and Awkward: 10 Wedding Reception Trends We Can Do Without

Weddings are supposed to be joyful events & cherished memories, but some trends make these celebrations more awkward than charming. Couples want their big day to stand out from the crowd- but some trends add unnecessary stress and discomfort all around. In this post, we’ll look at 10 such trends that are really too much and not worth the hype after all.

Over-the-Top Photo Booths

Photo booths are great- but when they get too excited with crazy props, elaborate setups or outfits, it’s an unnecessary expense. These days there is even rotating robotic photography that captures guests from all angles – quite a nuisance if you ask us! A lot of guests might just appreciate more candid and natural photos versus staged set ups. All you need is a basic backdrop & a couple of props, and you are good to go.

Remember, not everyone wants to contribute or participate in learning a dance routine and it turns the focus of the celebration into a performance. A real entrance can be just as epic without including any complicated choreography.

Lavish Cake Displays

A detailed three-tier cake may seem like a work of art, but they often go uneaten. People spend thousands of dollars for a complicated, multi flavor cake. Meanwhile – a lot of guests decide to go with other types of desserts. At the end of the day, you could be spending all that money on a cake no one may even like—or remember long after it is eaten anyway. Why not just go with something small and simple; choose a simple flavor rather than trying to show off.

Choreographed First Dances

The first dance should be a simple romantic moment – not a performance. Complex, choreographed dances can take away from the real charm and intimacy between the couple. A more genuine dance can result in a sweeter experience for the couple and guests alike.

Seating Arrangements That Are Too Complicated

Setting up a seating plan can sometimes confuse the guests and push them to sit with people they don’t really know. This can cause extra stress for the couple. With a casual, open style plan, all of the guests get to chat, mingle and have fun without any issues.

Unnecessary Party Favors

Most party favors, though nice in sentiment, end up forgotten or thrown in the garbage. Instead of giving gifts people will not like, consider a donation in the guests’ name during your wedding.

Garter Toss

While this may sound very traditional, it can be awkward for guests when the time comes to take them off. More importantly, it is antiquated and not relatable to most modern couples. One option to avoid this kind of unpleasantness is to forego the garter toss completely and stick with the party at hand.

Over-the-Top Themed Weddings

Creative themes are exciting, but they can quickly reduce the focus on what really matters in a celebration. It can make your guests feel a little out of place with the overall aesthetics, turning the function more into a costume party than a wedding. Keep it simpler and your day will be heartfelt.

Extravagant Lighting Displays

While elaborate lighting setups can be quite pretty, most guests won’t even notice them. Instead, let the venue – whether inside or outside – shine through without elaborate lighting setups. Using some soft lights that don’t get in the way creates intimacy without being too much.

Overdone Grand Exits

Sparklers, confetti or fireworks make a grand exit idea, but getting them done as planned can cause more stress. Some guests might actually consider these grand exits to be more a nuisance, rather than a highlight. A hand-waving goodbye is more than enough to end the night with a sweet note without any extra trouble.
