10 Ways Living With Less Has Made Life More Joyful in My 60s

Entering my 60s has given me so much to learn about what is important – the most important lesson I’ve learnt is that less is more. I used to think happiness was about more things — more clothes, more gadgets, more everything. But eventually, all that “stuff” just added extra stress. Getting rid of the extras hasn’t just decluttered my house – it’s decluttered my brain. Life is easier, simpler & so much happier now. Here are just a few ways that having less has changed my life for the better.

Less Clutter, More Calm

My house was like a warehouse—drawers filled with unused knick-knacks, closets full of clothes I didn’t wear, old books, papers, etc. When I was decluttering – I realized that I’d just clung on to things I didn’t even need or even loved. Decluttering has made my house open, fresh & calm. You’d be amazed how much freer you feel when you’re not lost in the clutter.

Saving Money on Things I Don’t Need

I used to buy new things on impulse — appliances, kitchen appliances, clothes I didn’t need, etc. But now, I think twice before buying. Do I really need this? Will it make me any happier? Most of the time, the answer is no. The money I’ve saved from this has gone towards things that make me happy, such as a visit to my grandkids or a warm meal with friends.

Fewer Choices, Less Stress

Trying on clothes every morning was like a battle with my closet — so many choices, nothing felt right. Now, I’ve been reduced to the things I love and look good in. It’s such a relief to pick something and know it works. The same applies to other aspects of my life. Fewer kitchen appliances mean no more digging in drawers, and I know exactly where everything is.

More Time for What Matters

It’s insane how much time I used to put into managing ” stuff ” — cleaning, organizing & buying more things. With fewer things I don’t feel tied down. Instead, I spend my time gardening or reading or going out with friends. I even took up a new hobby – painting! Without all the busy work, I’ve made space for things I enjoy.

A Home That Feels Like a Sanctuary

My house has become a place where I can relax. Every piece I’ve kept is a necessity or it feels good. I have little corners where I’ve stuffed my favorite chair, my favorite blanket & a good reading lamp. It’s very easy and so cozy. There is no longer that nagging sense of being swamped when I walk through the door.

Realizing What Truly Matters

I thought I would be happy with the latest and greatest – with a new television, new clothes or new gadgets. But, as I let those go, I realized they didn’t really bring me joy. Real happiness comes from things that matter – spending time with family, taking care of myself and the small pleasures in life, like a quiet morning with a cup of tea.

Easier to Stay Organized

I have always liked being organized, but that just didn’t seem possible with all of that clutter. When I began to live with less, everything just fell into place — literally. I remember where my keys are, my counters don’t get messy, and it only takes half as long to clean. It’s just one change, but it’s made life much easier.

Feeling Lighter—Inside and Out

When you remove physical clutter, you remove mental clutter as well. Sorting through old things was like a journey back in time – some of it was nice to have, but many kept me from moving forward. When I gave them up, I felt like I had been freed from a burden. I am freer, calmer and ready to get on with life.

More Gratitude for What I Have

Once you stop looking at what you don’t have, you begin to look at what you have. Today, it’s the little things that make me smile — the chair by the window, the aroma of coffee in the morning, or the sound of birds. Being content with fewer has taught me that I already have everything I need to be happy.

Freedom from Keeping Up with Others

It’s so easy to get caught up with following trends — a new phone, a kitchen remodel or a new look. That has been such a liberating thing to give up. It doesn’t matter if my phone is several years old or my furniture isn’t “modern.” I go for what suits me and not what is trendy. It’s so nice to feel I can go about life the way I want without worrying about what others are thinking.
