10 vintage 4th of July foods making a comeback

Fireworks, sunshine, and food—that’s the 4th of July in a nutshell. Sure, hot dogs and burgers will always be hits, but some retro dishes from decades past are also making their way back to the party table. We’re talking the food your grandma would serve in a casserole dish or scoop straight from the fridge, old-school style. Here are 10 vintage 4th of July foods that are trendy again.

Deviled Eggs

They’re bite-sized, creamy classics that were a staple at every potluck, picnic, and holiday spread back in the day. They’re made with hard-boiled eggs, mayo, mustard, and a good dusting of paprika. Now people even mix in bacon bits, jalapeños, or avocado for a little kick. They’re easy to grab, no fork needed, and always disappear fast.

Jell-O Molds

They’re wobbly, fluorescent, and just a little bit strange but also kind of charming. Jello molds were all the rage in the ’60s and ’70s, and they often came in ring or tower shapes, filled with fruit (or sometimes things that have no business being in Jell-O). Now they’re back and are a retro-chic party centerpiece. Double points if you serve yours in a vintage Tupperware mold.

Homemade Lemonade

Fresh lemonade was all people had to beat the heat before the invention of bottling drinks and soda fountains. The original lemonade is made with freshly squeezed lemons, sugar, water, and ice. It’s simple, but special when you’re drinking it from a mason jar on a hot summer day. Bonus points if you mix in some fresh mint or sliced strawberries to make a perfect summertime drink that’s making a comeback.

Ambrosia Salad

It’s sweet, fluffy, and it’s definitely not healthy. But this “salad” has been a nostalgic staple for decades. Made with whipped cream or Cool Whip, mini marshmallows, canned mandarin oranges, pineapple, and coconut, you’ve got dessert that’s pretending to be a side dish. It’s light, it’s cool, and it’s a total taste of grandma’s kitchen.

Forget Greek yogurt, truffle oil, and other fancy additions. We’re talking about classic, creamy potato salad with boiled potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, mayo, yellow mustard, and maybe some chopped pickles or celery. It’s rich, creamy, slightly tangy, and an essential side for BBQ ribs or grilled chicken. Classic potato salad has been cooling down families on summer nights for decades, and it’s back in vogue.

Watergate Salad

It sounds like a political conspiracy, but it’s actually a retro, green dessert from the 1970s. Made with pistachio pudding mix, crushed pineapple, Cool Whip, and mini marshmallows, Watergate salad is sweet, fluffy, and a little bit weird (but in the best way). It’s back on menus at retro cookouts and themed BBQ spreads.

Macaroni Salad

Cold, creamy, elbow macaroni salad is back in vogue and thank goodness for that. It is made with elbow macaroni, mayo, mustard, diced onions, bell peppers, and celery. It’s the perfect side you can pile next to anything that comes off the grill. It’s cheap and easy to make, simple to double if you’re cooking for a crowd, and tastes like childhood picnics.

Layered Flag Cakes

You know the one: white sheet cake with whipped cream frosting, blueberries for stars, and sliced strawberries for stripes. Those patriotic layered cakes used to be a mainstay at every 4th of July potluck, and now they’re getting modern makeovers all over Instagram. From fresh berries to cream cheese frosting to gluten-free recipes, these cakes are festive, delicious, and super-shareable.

Cherry Pie

Apple pie may be traditional, but cherry pie is making a major comeback. Its glossy red filling and buttery crust (especially if you go all out with that beautiful lattice topping) have made cherry pies a favorite for July 4th parties. Eat it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a slice of all-American heaven.

Boiled Corn on the Cob with Butter and Salt

Although everybody loves grilled corn on the cob, the old-fashioned boiled variety is making a huge comeback. Boiled corn is soft, steamy, and ready for a big swipe of butter and a sprinkle of salt. It’s the kind of food you eat with both hands and don’t care if it gets stuck in your teeth. It’s pure summer bliss.
