The 4th of July is supposed to be a day full of fun. Fireworks, BBQ, and celebrating with friends and family are all normal. But here’s the thing. Some of those “fun” activities may be secretly driving your neighbors a little bit crazy. What may seem like harmless fun to you is just slowly making everyone else on the block angry. They’re counting down the seconds until you shut off the grill and put the remote down. These are 14 Fourth of July habits that no one likes to admit but everyone is secretly thinking.

Lighting Fireworks Way Too Early (or Way Too Late)

Your neighbors are fine with fireworks on the 4th of July. They aren’t fine with fireworks on the 2nd, 3rd, or 5th of July. Nor are they ok with it at midnight when they are trying to sleep. These random explosions during weird times of the day terrify their pets, wake up their kids, and cause a lot of stress for anyone trying to relax.
Letting Party Guests Park Everywhere

We’ve all seen this before. Cars are parked on the lawn, in driveways, or so close together that no one can even drive down the street. Your party guests may not see the issue with it, but your neighbors do when they can’t even get their own car in and out of their driveway.
Blasting Music All Day (and Night)

It’s fine to play music at your BBQ. But blasting it at a level where you think you’re DJ-ing a stadium show? It’s a major turnoff, especially if you start in the morning and keep it going long after the fireworks have died down. Not all of us want to hear Born in the USA at 11 PM.
Leaving Trash Behind After the Party

When things like empty bottles, napkins, and food plates from your July 4th party get left in your yard (or heaven forbid, blow into someone else’s), it’s more than annoying. No one wants to wake up on the 5th and have to clean up after your party.
Starting the Grill at the Crack of Dawn

Sure, you want your ribs to be fall-off-the-bone tender, but starting your smoker at 6 AM seems more like overkill. It smells like noxious fog to your neighbor who’s still trying to sleep, not to mention the clanging of grill tools or booming voices of an early morning chat.
Taking Over Shared Outdoor Spaces

Living in an apartment or townhome comes with perks like shared outdoor space. But when you take over the picnic tables, throw a party on the shared lawn, and act like it’s your own personal backyard, it makes others feel like they can’t use their own space.
Setting Off Loud Firecrackers in the Middle of the Street

The giant, boom-boom firecrackers are fun to set off, but they’re also seriously nerve-rattling. This is especially the case when they set them off when they bounce off buildings or are dangerously close to houses. And this is more than just the dogs barking. We’re talking some people jumping out of their skin each time one goes off.
Letting Kids Run Wild in Everyone’s Yard

It’s great that kids are playing, but if you let them run into all your neighbors’ yards, scream at full volume, and trample the flower beds? Not cool. Always make sure that they’re under some supervision so you don’t tick off all the neighbors.
Taking Over the Sidewalks

Setting out folding chairs, coolers, strollers, blankets, and other gear on the sidewalk might feel like you’re making room in your yard, but people still need to walk their dogs, get strollers out of their driveways, or just walk. It’s like making people take a zig-zag course to get anywhere.
Not Containing Pets

Some people allow their dogs to wander around freely during the celebration or to bark all night in the backyard. Uninterrupted barking or sudden entrance of a nervous dog can be very annoying to your neighbors, especially if their pets are also sensitive to noise.
Turning Your Yard Into a Mini Carnival

Bounce house? Oversized speakers? Inflatable swimming pool? Fog machine? Your yard may be a playground for guests, but for your neighbors, it may feel like you are living next to a carnival. It may be amusing for you, but a sensory overload for your neighbors.
Sparking Fire Hazards Close to Homes

Setting fireworks off near trees, fences, or rooftops is not just annoying to your neighbors; it’s frightening. Everyone is thinking the same thing: “Set one more firework the wrong way and we are all calling the fire department.”
Ignoring Quiet Hours Completely

Your neighborhood has an unspoken “quiet time.” If you are still yelling, laughing, and setting off fireworks at 1 A.M., people will be definitely lying in bed, hoping you all run out of steam (and lighter fluid).
Not Cleaning Up Firework Debris the Next Day

The next day, the entire street looks like a scene after fireworks night: burnt out fireworks, plastic wrappers, and cardboard tubes. If you don’t pick it up by noon, your neighbors will start to wonder if you are just waiting for the wind to blow it away.
