11 Vacations I Took Once and Would Never Do Again

Trips are supposed to be fun and easy, but not all travel goes as planned. Sometimes what might seem like an ideal place can end up being emotionally draining or disappointing. From overcrowded shores to outrageously expensive cities, I’ve seen my fair share of trips I would never return to. These vacations gave me some lessons in planning, timing, and choosing the right destination to visit. Below are 11 trips I made once and wouldn’t make again — and why they weren’t worth the hype.

Crowded Beach Resorts in Cancun, Mexico

Cancun’s beaches look great on camera. But when I went there, it was as if everyone in the world thought so too. The once-pristine sands were crowded with loud tourists, kids running about, and souvenir sellers busily attempting to get your money. Even going to the water was difficult. What was supposed to be a relaxing beach escape turned into a battle. Nightlife is overrated and one-dimensional & the city is very touristy. I realized I like the quieter, less tourist-infested beaches.

Cruise Ship Nightmare in the Caribbean

I took a Caribbean cruise that I thought would be luxurious and restful, but it was the other way around. Ports like Nassau & Cozumel were packed with other cruise passengers, making it impossible to experience the local culture. The wait for food, games, elevators was frustrating on board. It was like being stuck in a floating mall. And when we pulled up home, I vowed to never take cruises again.

Las Vegas Overload, Nevada

I thought a trip to Las Vegas would be exciting; however, it was so stressful. There was constant noise, bright light and a sea of casino-goers – you could barely breathe. It was a never-ending trail of tourist traps on the Strip, and it was all so expensive. Even the shows and buffets I had been looking forward to were awful because of the long lines and the mediocrity. It was amusing for a day but never again.

Freezing in Iceland in Winter

Iceland during the winter looked enchanting, with the promise of seeing Northern Lights and ice caves. But I wasn’t prepared for how cold the weather would be. Cold winds and slippery roads made moving around stressful and even perilous. Not to mention that the skies were so grey I missed the Northern Lights. Iceland is nice but I learned to go when it’s warmer and more pleasant to travel.

Overwhelming Crowds in Paris, France

Paris is referred to as the City of Love but my visit was anything but. It was a nightmare to get anywhere near the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre due to the crowds. I queued for hours only to be ushered through when I got there. Even walking down the Seine was overrun with visitors. It also felt unsafe – with run down areas & crowds of pushy con men surrounding most tourist sites. I couldn’t find the attraction I’d been expecting amid the chaos – it made me question visiting such popular cities.

Hot and Miserable in Dubai, UAE

I had been curious about Dubai’s opulence, but I went in the summer and wasted my time. There was not much we could do outdoors and the heat was too extreme, going up to 110°F (43°C). Even getting from the hotel to a taxi was a drag. The best part of my time I spent indoors, occupying air-conditioned malls – not exactly a vacation. If I do visit again, it’s going to be in the colder months.

Budget Disaster in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is an Instagram-favorite – but the truth wasn’t as idyllic. Trendy destinations such as Kuta and Seminyak were overrun, loud and full of aggressive touts. Traffic was hell, and short trips were excruciatingly stressful. Even the beaches were, in some places, filled with trash. It’s a beautiful island, but the tourist-packed parts of it killed me.

Unprepared in Yellowstone, USA

Yellowstone National Park is magnificent, but it was an error to come there during high season. It was a very crowded park and traffic jams on the scenic drives didn’t help. Trying to view Old Faithful or any animals involved trudging through crowds. And I didn’t realize just how much preparation it required—accommodations and park tickets were reserved months in advance, which left me scrambling for last-minute options.

Overpriced London, England

London is a city rich in history and culture. However, I couldn’t enjoy myself because everything was so costly. Everything from the food to the attraction was too expensive and my cash disappeared in a blink. Most tourist destinations, such as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London, were so crowded it was hard to see anything. I went home drained – emotionally and financially.

Humidity and Mosquitoes in the Amazon, Brazil

Exploring the Amazon Rainforest sounded adventurous but it quickly became exhausting. It was too humid, and I was constantly fighting mosquitoes, even though I used repellents. To sleep in the jungle was to sleep through strange noises and unpleasant conditions. The wildlife was incredible but the physical discomfort made it a one-time experience for me.

Too Touristy in Santorini, Greece

Santorini looks postcard-perfect but the heat of summer was too much. The narrow streets of Oia were lined shoulder to shoulder with tourists posing for a sunset picture. The restaurants and hotels were too expensive and the white-washed buildings lost their glamour in the madness. It was more a tourist trap than an idyllic Greek vacation.
