10 Unexplained Phenomena That Science Can’t Yet Answer

With all the technology we have at our disposal, you’d think we understand everything in our world by now,—but no. The universe likes to keep us guessing! Let’s look at some of the weird stuff that we can’t wrap our heads around, for one reason or another. Here are 10 unexplained things science still can’t explain.

Dark Matter

When you look up at the night sky, all those stars & galaxies you see make up a tiny fraction of what’s actually out there. The rest is something invisible called dark matter. We can’t see it, we can’t touch it—but it helps to hold galaxies together. Scientists are trying to work out what it’s made of or how it works.

Ball Lightning

The idea of a glowing ball of light floating through your window sounds like something from a sci-fi movie—but it’s completely real. It’s called ball lightning and it’s as spooky as it sounds. These glowing orbs appear during storms but scientists can’t pinpoint why they happen or what they’re made of.

Spontaneous Human Combustion

There have been numerous documented cases of people suddenly bursting into flames without any obvious reason. And it’s not because they’ve gotten too close to a campfire. These are people who have gone up in flames out of the blue with no clear source of ignition. It’s a rare & bizarre phenomenon that we still have no idea about.

The Taos Hum

If you ever visit Taos, New Mexico, you might hear a low-pitched sound, kinda like a distant diesel engine—but there’s no source in sight. Known as the Taos Hum, it’s a mysterious sound that people hear in various parts of the world yet we don’t know where it comes from. Scientists have various ideas although there’s no concrete explanation.

Quantum Entanglement

Quantum entanglement is the bizarre idea that when two particles become linked, what happens to one instantly affects the other. It doesn’t matter how far apart they are—they’re linked. Scientists are using this to help make cutting-edge technology like quantum computers. However, the why & how behind it is unexplained.

Fast Radio Bursts

Fast Radio Bursts, or FRBs, are intense blasts of radio waves coming from way beyond our galaxy. They last just a few milliseconds. Scientists have caught these cosmic signals for years but where they come from & why are still a complete mystery. Are aliens trying to make contact? Or is it a natural phenomenon? We just don’t know.

The Tunguska Event

In 1908, a massive explosion flattened 2,000 square kilometers of Siberian forest, releasing the amount of energy equivalent to thousands of atomic bombs. To this day, no one’s quite sure what caused it. The leading theory is that a comet or asteroid blew up in the atmosphere. However, we’ve never found an impact crater. So what caused it?

The Hessdalen Lights

Over in Norway, people are dealing with bright orbs of light that float above the ground and move at incredible speeds or sometimes stay put. Despite years of study, no one can definitively say what causes these lights. Some think it’s a natural battery created by metallic minerals reacting with a sulfurous river running through the valley. Even so, it’s still largely guesswork.

The Wow! Signal

In 1977, a radio telescope in Ohio picked up a signal from space that was so strong and unusual that the astronomer who discovered it wrote “Wow!” next to the data. For just over a minute, this signal from the Sagittarius constellation had people thinking we received our first alien phone call. However, decades later of trying and nobody has ever heard anything like it again. Its origin remains one of space’s biggest unanswered questions.

Fairy Circles of Namibia

In Namibia, there are thousands of perfectly circular patches of land where nothing grows and they’re called fairy circles. These circles can be up to several meters in diameter. They create a polka-dot pattern across the landscape yet the cause of these formations is still unknown. Theories range from termites to plant toxins but no explanation has all the answers.
