13 things we used to trust without thinking twice

Back then, we trusted a lot of things without even thinking about it. It may be something we saw on TV, clicked on the computer, or ate off the floor. We just believed it was fine. There was no second-guessing or big worries. But now? We double-check everything. Here are 13 things we used to trust without a second thought but would never trust today.

Strangers on the Internet

Someone said they were 13 years old and loved the same band as you, and you just took their word for it. You had full-on conversations with people for hours and even gave them your email address. Fake profiles? Creepy internet people? That didn’t cross anyone’s mind. These days, we question everything and look up our real friends’ usernames twice just in case.

Climbing Into Inflatable Bouncy Castles

We just saw one of those things, ran straight over, and hopped in. Nobody asked if they were safe or clean or even if there was someone to supervise us. We just had a blast jumping around like crazy with 12 other kids. These days, parents check every corner, ask if it’s properly anchored down, and make you sign three waivers before they’ll even let their child step inside.

Forwarded Emails and Chain Letters

“Forward this to 10 people or bad luck will come to you and your family forever!” And what did we do? We all did a mass-panic email forward to every single person in our inbox. It just seemed so legit back then. These days, if someone sends a chain message, you just delete it and block them in one eye blink.

The Weather Report on TV

The guy on the news said it was going to be sunny, and you left the house in your flip-flops with no backup plan. There were no weather apps, no radar forecasts, just blind faith. Nowadays, we look at our phones five times and still end up taking an umbrella.

Public Payphones

We just picked one up without thinking. There was no hesitation or wiping the phone. The handset literally touched your face, and you would sometimes even eat something after touching it. These days? We see a payphone and think we’ve walked into a museum. Touching it without gloves? Are you mad?

Leaving Our Bikes Unlocked Outside the Store

You’d just prop your bike against a wall or lay it down by the stairs and run inside. You wouldn’t lock it or even consider that someone might actually steal it. These days, you need two locks, a GPS tracker, and probably a security guard on top of that just to be half sure it’ll be there when you come back out.

Eating Food That Fell on the Floor (a.k.a. the 5-Second Rule)

If it fell on the floor and you picked it up in less than 5 seconds, it was still “clean.” Everyone bought into the magical 5-second rule. Now, you drop a chip, and everyone’s just staring at it like it’s the plague. Nobody’s touching.

Letting the Computer Auto-Install Stuff

Remember those pop-ups that said “Click here to install”? We clicked. We didn’t even read one word, didn’t ask anyone or Google it. We just hit the “yes” button. That’s how we got 10 toolbars on Internet Explorer and some weird game that made your computer beep every five seconds. Nowadays, we double-check every single download and still feel anxious.

Free Samples From Strangers at the Mall

Someone’s walking around with a tray full of tiny food bites or small drink cups? We were on it like a hawk. We didn’t even ask what it was, where it was from, or if it had nuts in it. We just took and ate. Nowadays, we look at those samples and think, “Who touched this? Where’s the gloves?”

Burning CDs From Random Websites

We’d go on sketchy music sites, click the biggest “Download” button (even if it wasn’t the real one), and somehow end up with a playlist. Sometimes we got the song, but sometimes we got a virus. Either way, we trusted it every time.

Leaving the Front Door Unlocked During the Day

Going to the store? Visiting a neighbor? We’d leave the front door unlocked or even wide open. It was no big deal. These days, we triple-check the door is locked even when we’re inside, set the alarm, and still peek out the window just to be sure.

Carrying Cash Everywhere

We would just walk around with a wallet full of cash, and no one thought anything of it. You’d fold up birthday money, keep change in your pockets, and hand over real bills. Nowadays, we panic if we don’t have a card, a phone number, or some sort of backup payment option.

TV Commercials That Promised Magic Results

Toys that fly on their own, dolls that talk, floors that clean themselves, and stains that disappear instantly. We just saw it, and we believed every second of it. Then that toy would arrive, but only to find out that it’s not working. We should have known better, but didn’t. Nowadays, we watch every ad and then immediately search for reviews and real-life videos to check if it’s just a scam.
