10 Things To Never Do On Social Media

In today’s world, it’s difficult to find someone who doesn’t use social media. This applies to all age categories, from young kids to aged grandparents. There are various social media platforms online, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X, TikTok, and Discord. In fact, an average person daily spends more than 2 hours on social media.  But some things on social media can land you in trouble. They can cause you unnecessary tension, damage your reputation, and even result in legal action. In this list, we’re looking at 10 things you should never do on social media.

Overshare Personal Information

Do not publicize your home address, phone number, or ID number in your social media account. And the same goes for your bank account details and passwords. Even if you don’t directly post them on social media, you might mistakenly upload or share a screenshot, document, or photo with personal sensitive information. So, always watch what you post on social media. Such data should never be shared anywhere online as it risks you becoming a victim of a privacy exploit and identity theft.

Engage in Online Arguments

You might have the urge to argue over things you see online. You might see fake news, a post about your favorite celebrity, or even a negative post about yourself or your loved ones and start an online argument over it. Your involvement in online arguments can also damage your reputation, especially when things get heated, and you forget to be polite and logical in your arguments.

Post While Highly Emotional

Another social media mistake is posting while you are angry or sad. When you post things while you’re highly emotional, your post might be full of hate or cringe-worthy emotions. The same post will embarrass you later (when you’re in a calm mind). That is why it is important that we never post when we are high on emotions. Always let things cool off before you air it out publicly.

Share Fake News

If you are going to post something about an event or a person, especially on a serious or controversial topic, make sure that the facts are accurate. There are many fact-checking sites where you can do it. Even a quick Google search can help you check whether it is true or fake. Sharing fake news or misinformation can be damaging to the people attached to the news. It can also ruin your reputation and the trust others have in you.

If your employer and/or colleagues have ever gotten on your nerves, you might feel like venting on social media. Sure, venting on the internet may give you a sense of release at that time. Unfortunately, behavior like this has consequences. Your posts may be viewed by your colleagues and employers, which worsens the situation. Even if not seen by them, others on your social media might see this and question your professionalism.

Post Inappropriate Photos

Some photos might seem funny right now, but posting them online may only cause humiliation and regret later. This could be a suggestive photo of you or an embarrassing photo of a friend. Even if you delete it a few hours later, it’s already been viewed by a lot of folks at that point. Also, please remember that once you put something on the internet, it stays there for good.

Participate in Cyberbullying

With social media, you can criticize or embarrass anyone easily. Sometimes, what you say won’t feel real or serious sitting in front of your computer or typing on your phone. But in truth, cyberbullying is every bit as real as bullying or harassing someone physically. It can ruin lives. That is why you should always be respectful and empathetic in online interactions.

Engage in Illegal Activities

Some people might do stupid and illegal things and then want to post them online carelessly – like drug use, vandalism, or drinking when underage. But those posts damage your reputation and can even cause legal consequences. Since social media can be done anonymously (especially if your real name isn’t in your profile), some people even use social media for illegal activities like cyberstalking, catfishing, child exploitation, scams, and fraud. But even if you use fake details about yourself on social media, you can be tracked and punished for your illegal actions.

Disrespect Others’ Privacy

Everyone has different levels of comfort about their exposure online. If you are in a photo or video with other people, you should always ask for their permission before posting it online or tagging them. To post a photo of others without their permission is an invasion of their privacy.

Ignore Privacy Settings

Most social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok, have their own privacy settings. These settings may also change from time to time, bringing in new updates. Take the time to explore the different privacy settings and choose settings you’re comfortable with. This helps you limit who can see your content on social media and protect your personal information.
