Often, villains are not as wrong or evil as we’d like to think. Movie villains often have complex plans that are just too much, but we can see a little bit of logical explanations behind some of them. Many times, they want to make the broken world whole, save themselves or others, and overcome injustices. The problem is they do it through violent or extreme methods. A lot of the time, these so-called villains are only fighting for the things they think are right and go about it a different way. If they had chosen a different method, maybe they would’ve been the good guy all along. Here are eight movie villains that had a point, even if they approached it all wrong.

Killmonger (Black Panther)

The character of Killmonger in Black Panther wanted to offer paradise to the oppressed people of the world – especially black people who have been suffering for many years. He felt Wakanda could create actual change if the country was known to the world instead of being hidden. He was violent and wanted to take control by force – but he just wanted justice and equality. That’s not so bad, is it?
Magneto (X-Men series)

Magneto had survived the Holocaust and understood what hate & fear could do. He witnessed the way mutants were treated badly by humans and knew that mutants had to defend themselves. He also knew that humans would never accept mutants. Professor X hoped for peace – But Magneto knew that survival required action. His extreme fear about mutants being killed off seems reasonable to us!
Thanos (Avengers: Infinity War)

Sure, Thanos tried to kill half the population of Earth – but hear us out. He believed that planets were becoming too crowded and there were not enough resources for everyone. In his mind, destroying half the people was the only way to save what was left. Maybe it was a necessary evil.
The Joker (The Dark Knight)

Some villains – like The Joker – had no interest in money or power. He felt that people would show their true nature if they were pushed too far. And that there was no difference between a psychopath like him and a normal person. In the film, he set up scenarios to push people to their breaking point. He was totally cruel and insane but he was not entirely wrong about society’s rules being just for show.
Ra’s al Ghul (Batman Begins)

Ra’s al Ghul thought Gotham was so corrupt it should be destroyed and recreated. Obviously his plan included lots of destruction. But his idea that Gotham was corrupt and full of criminals wasn’t wrong. Ra’s extreme approach made him a villain but he had a point about how bad things had become.
Ozymandias (Watchmen)

Ozymandias committed lots of crime to restore peace in a world where everyone wanted to kill each other. His solution was to fake an alien attack and create a common enemy for everyone to hate. His plan killed millions but it also saved countless people in a larger world war.
The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz)

We think that The Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz was not evil. Dorothy was kind of at fault – she landed on her sister and killed her then took her magical shoes. All that the Wicked Witch really wanted was revenge which she deserved.
Roy Batty (Blade Runner)

How was Roy Batty in Blade Runner at fault? He was a replicant who was created to do whatever he was asked to do. He wasn’t trying to hurt people just for fun. He was just trying to stay alive – something we all would have done.
