Anyone who’s ever had the opportunity to go traveling will know how it can completely change your life. And it only gets better when you’re over 60 since you have the freedom & time to do so! Who wouldn’t want to stand at the foot of the tallest mountain in the world? But even getting to Everest Base Camp is difficult as the high altitude & cold can be tough—even for the fittest people. As we get older, our bodies don’t always work as well at high altitudes – so it’s a risky trek for those over 60.

The Amazon Rainforest, South America

You can’t deny that the Amazon is beautiful, thanks to all that stunning scenery & animals you never knew existed. Unfortunately, it comes with its own set of challenges including extreme heat & humidity. And then there are some overly-friendly bugs, too! While it’s definitely an adventure – it’s also one where you should weigh the pros & cons first.

Death Valley, USA

Death Valley in the summer is famously hot and while dry heat is easier for some to handle than humidity, it’s the dehydration & heatstroke risk that’s a bigger worry. Older travelers especially need to watch out—as we age, our body’s cooling system isn’t as efficient as it used to be. If you’re determined to visit then perhaps you should save it for the cooler months.

The Sahara Desert, Africa

The Sahara is like nowhere else on Earth because it’s so vast and extreme. Daytime can get blisteringly hot, while nights can be freezing. And finding water is a challenge at any time of the day! While it’s an incredible place, it’s more suited to the younger, more adventurous types who don’t mind the fluctuating temperature.

Venice, Italy

With its canals & history, Venice is a dream. But, those charming cobblestone streets and bridges can be a bit of a nightmare for anyone with mobility issues, while high water levels can also make getting around difficult. It’s a gorgeous city—just be prepared for a bit of a workout getting from A to B.

Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is on many people’s bucket lists because it takes you on an amazing journey through incredible landscapes. However, it’s not a walk in the park. The high altitude & steep paths alone make it difficult. Once you factor in the uneven terrain, you have a recipe for a tough trek for those over 60.

Varanasi, India

Varanasi is a city that’s packed with history & culture, yet this also works against it. It’s so crowded! Being in such a busy place can be pretty overwhelming, especially with all the narrow lanes & busy ghats (riverfront steps). You won’t be able to forget Varanasi—for better or for worse. Prepare for sensory overload!

The Great Wall of China

Visiting the Great Wall is an incredible experience but those steps are no joke. Not only are they steep & uneven, there are also a lot of them—more than you might ever expect. That’s why it might be best for those over 60 to avoid it. Of course with the right preparation it’s definitely doable.

Antarctica

Antarctica is the ultimate adventure since it’s so remote and utterly breathtaking. Sadly, getting there often means crossing the notoriously choppy Drake Passage and the cold can be tough for anyone—let alone those with existing health conditions. Before heading over, think about your comfort & health.

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is a city that never sleeps, thanks to its amazing street life and busy markets. And while it’s an exciting place to explore, the intense heat & humidity can be a bit much – especially for anyone not used to tropical climates. Plus, dealing with the crowded streets & public transport is more drama than it’s worth.
