10 Signs Your Pet Thinks It Owns You

Let’s be honest—if your pet had thumbs, they’d probably file taxes in your name & charge you rent because they think they’re the boss of the house. You might’ve seen your dog staring at you like he pays the mortgage, or your cat giving you attitude for sitting in her chair, for example. If that’s happened to you before, know that you’re not alone. Here are ten signs that your pet thinks you’re just the help.

They Block Your Path

You’re trying to walk from the kitchen to the living room, but your pet plants themselves right in your path like they own the floorboards—and they won’t budge. You have to do that awkward side-step shuffle just to get past them because guess who’s really in control of the house? It’s not you. Your pet dictates exactly where you’re able to go and when you’re able to move, too.

They “Correct” Your Schedule

Forget alarm clocks because your pet knows exactly when it’s food time and they don’t care what your sleep schedule looks like—cue a slobbery face nudge or dramatic meow in the morning. They might even put a paw to your forehead as part of their routine and woe betide if you’re five minutes late because you’re gonna hear about it. And you’ll hear it repeatedly, at full volume.

They Watch You Eat

Anytime that you sit down with a plate of food, you’ll suddenly get a lot of intense eye contact from your pet and even though you haven’t even taken a bite, your pet is already mentally dividing it. They’re not begging—they’re waiting for you to remember whose house this really is and how the food should always go to them first. Bonus points if they sigh loudly or look personally offended when you don’t share.

They Claim Furniture

That cozy spot on the couch is occupied every time you walk into the living room and no, your pet isn’t moving—not even a little. You’re stuck balancing on the armrest, clutching your tea & wondering how your life came to this, but at least they’re comfortable, so what else matters? They might stretch out even more when they see you hovering nearby, just to make it harder and if you try nudging them, they act like you’ve committed some crime.

They Move Into Your Spot the Second You Stand Up

Likewise, each time you stand up for a drink, they’ll be in your chair by the time you come back, curled up like they’ve lived there since 1843. Asking them to move achieves nothing, as they’ll just blink at you like you should go sit somewhere else—the floor, maybe, or the porch. They might even sigh dramatically when you return, like you’re the one causing the inconvenience, or stretch to show you they’re not going to budge.

They Interrupt Phone Calls

Your pet could be in a deep sleep, but the second you make a call or open Zoom, they materialize, with a tail in your face, paws on your chest & nose directly in the camera. Apparently, “Do Not Disturb” doesn’t apply to them and they just assume every call is about them, regardless of whether it’s work or a call to the pizza place. They might even talk over you, with cats meowing louder and dogs barking more. One way or another, your pet has something to say.

They Sit Behind You

If your pet likes to sit behind your head or stare down at you from a shelf, that’s a sign they’re monitoring you, even though it feels unsettling typing an email while feeling your cat judging you. You’re not paranoid—they are watching and they follow your every move without making a sound, making sure to voice their disapproval anytime you do something ‘wrong.’ If they’re sitting on a desk or headboard, they’ll sometimes scoot closer without breaking eye contact.

They Drag Their Toys Onto Your Laptop

While you’re trying to answer emails, your pet puts a squeaky toy on your laptop, followed by a stare that says, “I expect results.” Some pets will straight-up drop things into your lap mid-task like they’re assigning you a project because they know when you’re focused on something else and they hate it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a deadline, a bill, or a grocery order—whatever it is, it can wait because they’re the most important thing in the room.

They Get Weirdly Possessive About Bathroom Breaks

You’d think they’d be discreet, but your pet will lock eyes with you while using their litter box—if you walk too close, they’ll either pause like you’ve committed a crime or speed up to finish before you kill the vibe. Apparently, they don’t appreciate your presence being near their royal toilet and some even get offended if you make noise. Then they’ll act like you’re the one who made things weird.

They Sniff Your Clothes

New jacket? Different shoes? Your pet is on it and they sniff like they’re checking for contraband or signs you’ve been unfaithful to them—the inspection doesn’t end until they’ve decided if this new item is acceptable. They’ll pause at one sleeve, give it a double sniff, then circle back later just to be sure, then, if the item passes, you’ll get a little head bump or tail flick. If it fails, they might ignore you for hours because you’ve broken some kind of trust agreement with them.
