We wanted to attend the ultimate Samba street party, for which the obvious choice is to go to Pedra Do Sal on a Monday night. Outside of the carnival, this is the biggest street party in Rio and a must-do on your Rio De Janeiro itinerary.

Pedra Do Sal (Salt Stone) is widely known as the birthplace of Samba. Each and every Monday night, barring any rain, the superb Roda De Pedra group meets and plays their hypnotic rhythms in the square underneath the historic rock steps.

As 8 pm approaches, the place starts attracting both locals and tourists from all over the world. The alleyways leading to the square are lined with food stalls, restaurants, bars and drink vendors.

Surprisingly, prices at the street stalls are very reasonable for such a popular event. We had amazing vegetarian Yakisoba and a couple of beers for less than $10. While having some cash on hand makes things easier, almost all the street vendors accept credit cards.

By 9 pm, the square was filled to the brim with large groups of people continuing to show up. The image of thousands of people hypnotically moving to the beats of Samba is one of the best travel memories of our lives.

Is Going to Pedra Do Sal Safe?

Like any other tourists, we were a bit concerned about going to Pedra Do Sal at night by ourselves. It’s not really a touristic area and is about a 30 minute Uber ride away from the relative safety of Ipanema & Copacabana.

While the overall atmosphere is electric and largely safe, we do recommend exercising usual caution when partying at Pedra Do Sal.

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Do not wander into the alleys surrounding the rock and the square
  • Taking some photos and videos is ok, but do it safely. Try to put your phone away and enjoy the atmosphere.

Our Tip To Enjoy Pedra Do Sal Safely

If you can, take a tour of Rio’s many attractions and make friends with your fellow tourists. Then, make a joint plan to go to Pedra Do Sal as a group.

We were lucky enough to meet a couple of amazing people from the UK, who, along with our tour guide, ended up accompanying us on Monday night.

Revelers clad in elaborate costumes, adorned with feathers, sequins, and glitter, create a visual spectacle that is nothing short of mesmerizing.

Essential Tips for Enjoying the Samba Street Parties

1. Dress Comfortably and Embrace the Carnival Spirit.

When attending the Samba Street Parties of Rio De Janeiro, comfort and a touch of carnival spirit should guide your choice of attire.

Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that allows you to move freely and stay cool amidst the energetic atmosphere. Embrace the vibrant carnival spirit by incorporating colorful elements into your outfit, whether a feathered headpiece, a bright scarf, or a fun accessory.

Dressing in the spirit of the festivities adds to the overall joyous ambiance and helps you immerse yourself fully in the experience.

2. Stay Hydrated and Bring Essentials Like Sunscreen and Comfortable Shoes.

Rio De Janeiro’s Samba Street Parties can get lively and energetic, so it’s essential to take care of yourself amidst the excitement.

Stay hydrated by carrying a reusable water bottle and taking regular sips throughout the festivities. The combination of dancing and warm weather can dehydrate, so keeping yourself well-hydrated will ensure you have the stamina to dance the night away.

Additionally, don’t forget to apply sunscreen generously before heading out, and bring a small bottle with you for reapplication during the evening.

Comfortable shoes are also a must, as you’ll be on your feet for extended periods. Choose footwear that provides support and won’t leave you with sore feet at the end of the night.

3. Be Aware of Your Surroundings.

As with any vibrant and crowded event, it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings during the Samba Street Parties. While the atmosphere is generally safe and joyful, it’s advisable to stay vigilant.

Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas, especially late at night, and stick to well-populated streets. If you’re unfamiliar with the neighborhood, consider exploring the parties with a group of friends or fellow travelers for added safety.

4. Keep Personal Belongings Safe During Crowded Events.

During the Samba Street Parties, it’s important to keep your personal belongings secure. While the celebrations foster a sense of community and camaraderie, it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

Carry a small bag or backpack with sturdy closures, and keep it in front of you or securely fastened to your body. Avoid displaying valuable items or carrying excessive amounts of cash. Consider using a money belt or a secure pouch hidden under your clothing for extra security.

5. Remain Respectful Towards Locals, Fellow Party-Goers, and the Environment.

Respect is a vital aspect of any cultural celebration, and the Samba Street Parties are no exception.

Remember to treat locals, fellow party-goers, and the environment with courtesy and respect. Engage in the festivities with a positive and open mindset, appreciating the cultural richness and diversity of the event.

Be mindful of the space you occupy, allowing everyone to enjoy the celebrations. Dispose of trash in designated areas, and help maintain the cleanliness of the streets.

Embrace the carnival spirit, take care of your well-being, and immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Rio De Janeiro’s most thrilling celebrations. Get ready to dance, make new friends, and create cherished memories that will stay with you long after the party ends.

6. Attend With a Group of Friends.

Consider joining the parties with a group of friends or fellow travelers for added safety and enjoyment. Together, you can navigate the crowds, look out for one another, and share in the excitement of the Samba Street Parties.
