10 Red Flags You Can’t Ignore When You Are Dating Someone New

A new relationship can be exciting, but you should always pay attention to anything that doesn’t feel right. Some warning signs may not be obvious in the beginning — however, they will grow into bigger issues in time. By paying attention to how one behaves with you and treats you at the beginning of the relationship can save you from heartbreak later on. Here are 10 red flags you never should ignore when dating a new person.

They Avoid Talking About Their Past

If someone won’t tell you anything about their past, relationships or life — that means something is off. It’s normal to keep things private at first, but a total refusal to talk could be a sign of an unresolved issue or something hidden. The key to healthy relationship is to be able to listen and understand one another’s past – constant avoidance can signal trouble.

They Disrespect Waitstaff or Service Workers

One’s attitude towards people in the service sector says a lot about their character. If they’re disrespectful, dismissive, or overly demanding with waitstaff, it shows a lack of respect and kindness. This attitude is a good indicator of how they will behave with others, you included, in the long run. It’s a red flag you should not ignore.

They Rush the Relationship

If they’re asking for big commitments too soon — moving in together or meeting the family after a couple dates — it may seem flattering at first. But this might be a mark of unhealthy attachment or a desperate attempt to maintain control of the relationship. True connections may take time to form – rushing could lead to a disaster down the line.

They Speak Negatively About Their Exes

If they continually criticize their exes or blame them for everything that went wrong, it might indicate that they haven’t really moved on & accepted responsibility for past issues. Healthy people learn from past relationships rather than bring bitterness with them to future ones. That sort of negative energy is poisonous in a long term.

They’re Secretive About Their Life

A little mystery can be intriguing, but too much secrecy is worrisome.  If they don’t tell you about work, family or life, they may not be honest. Trust is the basis of any relationship – you can’t really build trust in a state of constant secrecy.

They Have a Temper

When they blow off their temper over small issues, you know something’s wrong. Whether it’s road rage, screaming at passersby or snapping at you, constant anger can cause far worse problems down the line. Emotional control is essential in any relationship and a person with a short fuse will struggle with this.

They Don’t Respect Your Boundaries

A partner who crosses your emotional or physical boundaries isn’t being respectful. For instance, if you don’t feel like sharing or need room but they keep pressing — then that’s red flag territory. Boundaries play a vital role in trust and respect in any relationship.

They’re Always on Their Phone

If they’re always checking their phone more than paying attention to you on dates, then it’s a warning sign. It can leave you feeling worthless. Even though occasional distractions are normal, constant phone use may indicate something more serious, such as boredom or even cheating.

They’re Inconsistent with Their Words and Actions

When their words are not matched by their actions, it creates uncertainty and distrust. If, for instance, they say they will call but never do or if they say they’re honest but keep telling you small lies —  then you know something is up. Consistency is important for maintaining a solid and stable relationship.

They Try to Isolate You from Others

If they’re keeping you away from friends or family, this is a big red flag. Healthy partnerships leave time for one’s personal lives outside the partnership. Isolation can be a source of power and make you dependent on them, and it’s not healthy in the long run.
