While America has long been known for its superpower status, we have hit a rough patch. And it’s not just one big thing going wrong. Many factors are making people wonder if we’re starting to lag behind, including how we’re dealing with other countries & how we take care of our own people. Here are ten reasons people are worried about the USA’s position on the world stage.

Economic Competition from China

China has been growing its economy like crazy and it’s now the world’s second-biggest economy—with no signs of slowing down. They’ve poured money into technology by building things all over the place. They’ve even made friends around the world with their Belt and Road Initiative! This is spreading China’s influence around the world & giving us a run for our money.
Military Spending and Global Presence

While the USA still spends a lot on its military, more than anyone else in the world, other countries are catching up fast. For example, China & Russia are spending more. They’re also updating their technology & getting more involved in different parts of the world – which has made people question if America can still flex its military muscles like it used to.

Technological Advancements by Rivals

America used to be the best place for all the technological breakthroughs. However, countries like South Korea have improved their tech industries, especially in hot areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity & space. China, for example, has made big moves with 5G and is planning to build its own space station.
Political Polarization at Home

It’s no secret that things have been rather tense in the USA politically. People can’t seem to agree on anything—whether immigration or healthcare—and this kind of division makes it hard to get anything done. Worse still, it doesn’t exactly paint a picture of unity to the rest of the world. It seems as though we’re too caught up in our own drama to lead on the global stage.
Declining Global Influence

Lately, the US has stepped back from many international agreements & organizations like the Paris Agreement. Even with trade deals or nuclear agreements, it seems as though we’re more into going it alone. Unfortunately, it has left a gap that other countries are more than happy to fill. We’ve given up our seat at the head of the table.
Challenges to the Dollar’s Dominance

The US dollar has been the top dog in global finance for ages—but now other countries are trying to use their own currencies more. They’re even looking into using digital currencies! If they start moving away from the dollar, it’ll have huge consequences for the American economy and our influence across the world.
Aging Infrastructure

Our roads & bridges are showing their age and not in a good way. Even American public transportation is suffering! The American Society of Civil Engineers has repeatedly given our infrastructure bad ratings and advised that we need to spend a lot of money to fix everything. Rather than making things look nice, bad infrastructure hurts the economy—and the American people.
Educational System Falling Behind

Once, the USA was a leader in education yet now we’re trailing behind other developed countries. This includes important areas like math & science in which China is now dominating in. It’s a big deal for our future workforce and our ability to keep up in a world that’s so focused on growth & innovation.
Health Care System Inefficiencies

We spend more money on health care than any other country. Even so, our health outcomes aren’t so great because it’s a system that’s hard to understand. A lot of people struggle to get the care they need without going broke. It affects all manner of things, including how productive people are and how ready we’ll be for emergencies.
Environmental Challenges

America has some serious environmental issues to tackle. Natural disasters seem to be getting more powerful & hit us more often which costs a ton of money. These disasters also make it hard to keep things running efficiently. Also – we’re no longer leading the way in protecting the environment. How we deal with these challenges will test our ability to take care of our own.
