11 Reasons Why Modern Art is Overrated

You’ve probably seen modern art, heard about it—or even been confused over what the big deal is with a canvas painted all in blue. Modern art gets a lot of us heated as we try to figure out whether it’s the emperor’s new clothes or the most profound expression of our times. Naturally, not everyone’s on board with the hype. In fact, some people think modern art is a bit overrated and here are eleven reasons why. It’s time to see things differently!

It’s All About the Idea, But What About Skill?

Modern art loves to celebrate big, bold ideas which is cool & all—but it feels like the actual skill to make the art takes a back seat. What happened to those jaw-dropping Renaissance paintings? Those artists had skills that were truly worth it. But today, if you put a toilet in a room and call it art, you’re golden. Just where did all the craftsmanship go?

Price Tags That Make Your Wallet Weep

Many modern art pieces sell for millions, even though most of us think that we could make them ourselves. Some of these pieces are super simple yet their price tags are anything but. Essentially, they’re the art world’s version of paying top dollar for ripped jeans. While the artist might be famous, the price doesn’t always reflect the art’s value and often seems overpriced.

Feels Like a Club You’re Not Invited To

Whenever you’re feeling confused about a canvas splattered with random paint, wondering why it’s considered a masterpiece, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Modern art has a sense of exclusivity to it that makes it difficult to understand for people who aren’t art critics or part of the scene. There’s an unspoken rule that to “get” modern art, you need a certain level of education or sophistication. Most of us feel sidelined.

Shock Value Over Substance

With modern art, chasing the shock factor seems to be a trend as artists often push the envelope to grab headlines or ignite controversy. Of course, stirring the pot isn’t inherently bad. Yet it sometimes overshadows the artistry itself because the focus shifts from the skill & message behind the piece to how outrageous it can be. Most of the time, the piece wouldn’t hold up on its own.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Even though modern art is supposed to break new ground, it often feels like we’re stuck on repeat. We often see the same concepts recycled with minor tweaks. That’s rather disappointing for anyone looking for something truly new & it dulls the excitement around modern. Really, it’s just a merry-go-round of the same old ideas.

The Hype Machine

With art, who you know is far more important than what you create. Critics & galleries wield a lot of power and they’re able to make or break careers as they deem which pieces of art are worthy of attention. Sadly, it means that we celebrate some pieces more for their backstory than their actual merit. That’s not what art is supposed to be!

Will It Stand the Test of Time?

One of the big questions about modern art is whether it will endure. While classics from centuries ago still interest us, we just don’t know if today’s modern pieces will inspire the same attitudes down the line since so many pieces focus on current trends. As such, they don’t have the staying power of pieces that have captured emotions across generations.

Too Much Head, Not Enough Heart

Conceptual art focuses on the idea behind the work over actually making you feel something. Sure, they’re intellectually stimulating—but many of us feel confused when we look at these pieces. It’s one thing to appreciate the thought process behind a piece. When it doesn’t make you feel anything, you don’t feel anywhere near as moved.

Copy-Paste Culture

Naturally, the internet has made art more accessible than ever yet it’s also changed how we experience it. Online pieces will never replicate the feeling of standing in front of an artwork, taking in its scale, texture & presence. Essentially, such easy access dilutes the awe that comes from experiencing art in person. As a result, modern art feels a little too accessible.

Art or Everyday Object?

The line between art & ordinary objects is harder to define, even though this might challenge our perceptions & encourage us to find beauty in the mundane. However, it raises questions about what qualifies as art. Why are some ordinary objects “art” yet others are “trash?” There are no real standards to differentiate between the two with modern art.

Lost in Translation

Art is a form of communication although the message doesn’t always get through. When this happens, both the artist & the audience feel frustrated. Modern art has so many different meanings & abstract presentations which makes it far more prone to misinterpretation. Eventually, we start to question how useful it is as a medium for conveying ideas and emotions.
