While “Wonder Woman” may have been a hit worldwide, it didn’t make it to theaters in Lebanon. Lead actress Gal Gadot is Israeli and Lebanon has a strict boycott against Israeli products—even on people. The two nations’ geopolitical tensions & long-standing conflicts were too much for Lebanese authorities.

Disney’s live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast” has some problems being released in Malaysia due to a brief “gay moment.” This involved Josh Gad’s character LeFou and Malaysian censors asked Disney to cut the scene to comply with local regulations over LGBTQ+ content. But Disney refused to edit the film. The film was delayed and later released uncut.

“Deadpool” never got an official release in China as the film features a lot of over-the-top violence & raunchy humor. Let’s not forget the profanity! This didn’t sit well with Chinese censors who decided it was too much for audiences. They tried to agree on an edited version but couldn’t find one that met their standards. Eventually, they banned the film altogether. It’s a shame because Ryan Reynolds was too funny for words!

Likewise, “Brokeback Mountain” also never saw the light of day in Chinese theaters, despite its critical acclaim and multiple awards. Chinese authorities stuck to their strict rules on LGBTQ+ content. They disliked the film’s portrayal of a same-sex relationship as they argued it encouraged these relationships. Eventually, they deemed that it wasn’t appropriate and banned it.

“The Da Vinci Code” created controversy in several parts of the world due to the way it looks at alternative interpretations of Christian history. The film suggests there are hidden secrets within the Church. Naturally, countries like Egypt & Lebanon weren’t happy with this so they decided to ban the movie entirely. They saw it as blasphemy.

It’s no secret that the comedy “The Interview,” starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, caused a huge stir internationally. The film is about two journalists recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. As you might expect, the North Koreans didn’t like it! The backlash was so severe that it included threats & a massive cyberattack on Sony Pictures, the studio behind the film. As a result, the movie was banned in North Korea.

Once again, “Bohemian Rhapsody” was another film that faced censorship issues in China. The movie explores Freddie Mercury’s life, including his sexuality & struggle with AIDS. Chinese censors edited out scenes that referenced his homosexuality and any LGBTQ+ themes to fit with the country’s strict regulations. As such, Chinese audiences saw a much more sanitized version of the film that ignored a lot of the truth of Mercury’s dramatic life.

The film “Borat” is well-known for its outrageous humor and satirical portrayal of a Kazakh journalist traveling through the United States. As you might expect, countries like Kazakhstan & Russia didn’t appreciate how the film portrayed their people. Kazakh officials felt the film insulted their national identity, leading to a ban. Can you blame them?

While James Cameron’s “Titanic” is one of the highest-grossing films ever, it was censored in countries like India. The issue centered around the famous scene where Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) sketches Rose (Kate Winslet) wearing only a necklace. Local decency laws meant that the nudity was inappropriate for audiences. As such, those scenes were edited out or cut entirely from the theatrical release.

Russell Crowe’s film “Noah” tells the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. However, depicting prophets on screen goes against Islamic laws and traditions which is why the film wasn’t released in countries like Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE & Egypt. In fact, religious authorities declared the movie offensive. They take their religious history very seriously.
