Sometimes, politics gets rather messy since it involves a lot of money, a lot of power—and a lot of corrupt people! And some scandals are far more troubling than they first appear. From secret operations to massive corruption, there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes! Here are ten political scandals that turned out to be much worse than most people realize. Honestly, you’ll be surprised at just how shocking some of the details truly are!

COINTELPRO’s Domestic Espionage

Between 1956 & 1971, the FBI ran a secret program called COINTELPRO which targeted civil rights groups & anti-war activists. This involved agents spying on and trying to disrupt these groups, often without any legal justification. In fact, the group was a secret until activists broke into an FBI office in 1971. In doing so, they leaked documents to the press.
Operation Northwoods’s Startling Schemes

In 1962, top U.S. military brass came up with Operation Northwoods, which proposed staging fake terrorist attacks on American soil. Why? Because they wanted to create American support for a war against Cuba. Their ideas included hijacking airplanes, sinking boats carrying Cuban refugees—even setting off bombs in U.S. cities. Thankfully, President Kennedy said no to these proposals almost immediately after hearing about them.

The Keating Five’s Costly Influence

In the late 1980s, five corrupt U.S. senators (later known as the Keating Five) intervened with federal regulators on behalf of Charles Keating. They pressured regulators to back off from investigating Keating which delayed action against him. Eventually, Keating’s company, Lincoln Savings & Loan, collapsed in 1989. It cost taxpayers around $3.4 billion—most of the investors were elderly people who lost their life savings.
Iran-Contra’s Secret Dealings Unveiled

President Reagan’s administration was once involved in something called the Iran-Contra scandal. They secretly sold weapons to Iran—even though the country was under an arms embargo. Then, they funneled the money from these sales to support rebel fighters in Nicaragua. And they did it all without Congress’s approval. It was completely illegal! Eventually, the Iran-Contra scandal led to several investigations & convictions.
The UK Parliament’s Expense Abuses

In 2009, news broke that many British Members of Parliament (MPs) were misusing their expense accounts. They claimed money for things like luxury home renovations, high-end furniture—and even cleaning moats around their country estates! Naturally, the public was outraged and what followed were several public apologies. However, only 4 MPs were ever jailed.
Operation Mockingbird’s Media Manipulation

During the Cold War, the CIA launched Operation Mockingbird. This was a secret program to influence domestic & foreign media by recruiting news organizations to spread propaganda. The agency went as far as paying reporters to write false stories—and placing their own agents inside news outlets. It wasn’t until investigations in the 1970s that the full details came out.
Teapot Dome’s Secret Oil Deals

During the Teapot Dome scandal, the Secretary of the Interior, Albert B. Fall, secretly leased federal oil reserves to private oil companies without competitive bidding. In return, he received bribes worth over $400,000. The news later came out & Fall was convicted of corruption. He became the first U.S. cabinet member to go to prison while in office. That’s a precedent that nobody wants to set!
Lockheed’s Worldwide Bribery Exposed

To secure aircraft contracts, aerospace company Lockheed paid millions of dollars to foreign officials in countries like Japan & the Netherlands. In Japan, they paid around $3 million to Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka who later resigned and was arrested. In response to the corruption, America passed the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in 1977. The law tried to stop American companies from bribing foreign officials.
The CIA’s Secret MKUltra Experiments

Between the 1950s and the early ’70s, the CIA had a secret program called MKUltra focused on mind control. They conducted experiments on people without them knowing. These experiments involved using LSD, hypnosis, sensory deprivation & other extreme methods. Sadly, many of the subjects suffered long-term psychological damage and some even died.
Jack Abramoff’s Web of Corruption

In the early 2000s, news broke that lobbyist Jack Abramoff had scammed many Native American tribes out of tens of millions of dollars. He had promised them political influence, even though he usually couldn’t deliver on his words. Instead, Abramoff used the money to bribe politicians & pay for lavish trips. He even paid for several luxury goods! Following his conviction, Abramoff was jailed for six years yet only served four of them before being released.
