Let’s travel back in time and learn about some old-school trends that would definitely make today’s teens uncomfortable. You know—the days before high-speed internet and the simplicity of digital music. While these ten trends were popular back then, they’re a little out-of-touch for today’s youth. Really, they’ll never understand what made them so great. And that’s okay!

Frosted Tips
To get frosted tips, guys bleached the ends of their hair and it was all the rage among male pop stars. Today’s teens don’t get it! They prefer natural hair trends and such a stark, bleached look would shock them. If that wasn’t bad enough, the upkeep & damage from bleaching would send today’s more hair-health-conscious youth running for the hills.
Low-Rise Jeans
Low-rise jeans were so low that they made it a skill trying to sit down without revealing too much! They were everywhere in the early 2000s. You’d pair them with crop tops for that ultimate pop star look, although people’s preference for high-waisted jeans today is quite different. Lots of young people don’t want to deal with the constant battle to keep them from slipping too far when they bend over or sit down.

Overplucked Eyebrows
In the past, thin, almost line-like eyebrows were the standard of beauty and you shaped them meticulously with tweezers. Now, fuller brows are back in style. This has made the sparse look of the 90s & early 2000s much less appealing—if anything, they’re more of a cautionary tale in eyebrow grooming!
Platform Sneakers
Platform sneakers were real statements back in the day—the taller, the better. But walking in them was a real challenge! Of course, sneakers are still in yet many young people see the towering platforms of the past as more hazardous than fashionable. You can’t exactly seem laid-back when you’re towering over everyone & constantly trying to avoid a twisted ankle.
Butterfly Clips
Back in the 90s, if you were styling your hair, chances are you’d reach for a bunch of butterfly clips. These tiny clips helped us create some rather incredible hairstyles, even though putting all those clips in your hair was a challenge. Many modern teens care more about easy, breezy looks. Spending hours just to get your hair full of clips? That’s a waste of time to them.
Baggy Cargo Pants
We all remember extra-baggy cargo pants from the late 90s & early 2000s. They had more pockets than you could ever use and usually hung low—so you’d need a belt just to keep them up! Today’s styles are far sleeker and more form-fitting. As such, the oversized & floppy cargo look is much too bulky for teens who prefer a more tailored fit. Not to mention, it’s much more awkward!
Popcorn Shirts
For a hot minute, popcorn shirts were all the rage—they were incredibly stretchy, textured shirts that clung to every single curve. Somehow, they fit almost anyone but let’s just say they hug you in all kinds of ways. Many people today are obsessed with their appearance and wouldn’t like the clingy texture of popcorn shirts. Really, it’s a bit much for their taste.
Heelys
Heelys were shoes that could multitask—sneakers one second, rollerskates the next. Just pop in the wheels & you could glide down the hallway. Cool, right! As nice as they were, the whole idea of shoes with wheels doesn’t hit the same nowadays because many young people care more about practicality & safety. For them, the idea of switching from strolling to rolling is too out there.
Trucker Hats
In the early 2000s, you wouldn’t see a skater or surfer without a trucker hat. But nowadays, many young people care more about subtle & sleek headwear that they can pair with anything. Trucker hats are too loud for them! Instead, they want something a bit more understated and less bulky.
Visible Thong Trend (Whale Tail)
Even today, the whale tail is still rather daring—you’d let the top of your thong peek above your jeans. Yes, really! However, today’s fashion is more understated & flashing your undies isn’t the statement it used to be. For modern teens, showing off a whale tail is much too bold. They’d see it as far out of step with the current style ethos of taking it easy.
