There’s always a new fad to jump on! You know the ones—diets severely restricting what you can eat & apps promising to make us more productive. But in reality, these trends don’t always work and, actually, make us more stressed. Let’s look at ten lifestyle fads that are making us miserable despite their popularity.

Extreme Dieting

Jumping on the latest diet craze is exciting at first because who doesn’t want quick results? But when you cut out entire food groups or eat so little you’re dreaming of your next meal, it stops being fun. That’s not all—many extreme diets mess with your body & mind. They leave you feeling more deprived than you were at the start!
The Hustle Culture

Being told to “hustle harder” makes us feel like we’re never doing enough. Of course, working hard is important—but when you push yourself to the brink 24/7, life starts to lose its sparkle and burnout is hardly enjoyable. The constant pressure to achieve makes us feel guilty for taking a well-deserved break. It’s okay to pause sometimes!

Digital Detoxes

In theory, taking a break from screens sounds great, although cutting yourself off completely makes you feel a little lonely. Instead, you need to find a balance—rather than go from one extreme to the other. Try making your screen time intentional. This way, you’re not going off the grid and not making yourself a digital hermit!
Minimalism to the Extreme

Being minimalist is actually quite stressful. Suddenly, every item you own is under scrutiny and you start missing that quirky mug collection that made your morning coffee a bit more special. It’s one thing to declutter—it’s a complete other to strip your life of comforts & personal expressions. Minimalism shouldn’t be about counting items instead of valuing them.
The Self-Help Obsession

Reading self-help books & listening to podcasts allows us to feel like we’re on the path to being our best selves. But constantly looking for ways to improve makes it easy to forget to appreciate who you are right now. All this self-critique gets exhausting! You should never aim for personal growth at the cost of never feeling good enough.
Fitness Tracking

Fitness trackers are helpful, although tracking every step & calorie quickly turns into an obsession. Instead of enjoying a walk, you’re stuck on the numbers game and that sucks the joy right out of being healthy. Take a step back—exercise should revolve around feeling good rather than hitting targets.
The Productivity App Craze

There’s an app for everything and that makes it tempting to think we can organize our way to a perfect life. However, when your phone is pinging with reminders & to-dos, it’s hard to relax. Suddenly, you’re scheduling every minute of your day—including your “downtime.” Your life becomes a series of tasks to be checked off rather than experiences to enjoy.
The Clean Eating Movement

Eating healthy is great—until you start stressing over every bite not being “clean” enough. Food is more than fuel. It’s a time to enjoy yourself and spend time with others. Too much focus on purity makes meals a source of anxiety and this may even cause you to develop an unhealthy relationship with food.
The Gig Economy

Flexibility is fantastic but constantly hustling for the next gig? Not so much. Soon, you feel insecure & stressed because you lack any kind of stability or benefits. It makes the lifestyle feel like an incessant grind over a dream and the freedom soon loses its charm. The gig economy is a lot harder than many people will have you believe.
The Perfectionism Trend

Scrolling through social media, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have to be perfect. Unfortunately, trying to keep up is exhausting and leaves you feeling like you’re always falling short. Life is messy—and that’s perfectly okay. You should celebrate your imperfections by being authentic. This is way more fulfilling than chasing an unattainable ideal!
