19 Ideals & Beliefs Many Americans Are Abandoning

As Americans, we believe in many things that have been around for generations—but now, we’re starting to question them. Even the strongest-held ideas that we used to take for granted don’t seem as convincing anymore & we’re letting go of beliefs that no longer fit our lives. Whether it’s views on education or our attitudes about family life, there’s a lot that’s changing. Here are nineteen beliefs that Americans are abandoning.

Homelessness as Personal Failure

We don’t tend to believe that being homeless is a sign of personal failure anymore because we recognize that things like economic hardship, mental health issues & a lack of affordable housing play a big role. Programs like Housing First are trying to provide stable housing before addressing other challenges. Because of this, our support has grown for assistance programs that tackle the root causes while avoiding blaming individuals for these problems.

Belief in Lifelong Marriage as a Necessity

Many Americans no longer see marriage as essential for a happy life and instead, people have chosen to stay single or live with partners without getting married. In recent years, the marriage rate has declined as more people prioritize their personal goals and independence. The idea that everyone must get married is becoming more outdated, now that people make choices that suit their own lives.

Retirement at 65 Is Guaranteed

Fewer Americans believe they will retire comfortably at 65 due to economic factors like insufficient savings & doubts about Social Security’s future—these make retirement seem uncertain. Many people are working longer or planning for later retirement because they don’t believe they’ll have the funds to retire at 65. Other people are looking into alternative lifestyles, like downsizing or living abroad, to stretch their retirement funds.

Going to Church Every Week

Regular church attendance is on the decline in America and many people who used to go every Sunday are now attending less often or not at all. In fact, the percentage of adults who consider themselves religious has dropped in recent years, with younger generations in particular less likely to attend weekly services. This is because some people believe they’re able to practice their faith in whatever way you want, while others are turning away from religion entirely.

Belief In Hell As a Real Place

Speaking of religion, fewer Americans believe in hell as a literal place of eternal fire, with some people seeing it symbolically or rejecting the concept altogether. It’s mostly due to changing religious beliefs & interpretations—fewer people believing in religion means fewer people being scared of eternal punishment. Some argue that hell is less of a place of eternal fire and more of a place without love or happiness.

The Devil as a Real Being

Likewise, for those who are still religious, the idea of Satan as a literal figure out to tempt & harm people is starting to disappear. Instead, many religious Americans view the devil as a symbol of evil or a metaphor for bad choices, rather than a real entity. They see Satan as a literary figure who is meant to scare us into doing the right thing and that he isn’t necessarily the two-horned guy we see in the media.

Daily Prayer Is Required for a Faithful Life

The idea that daily prayer is necessary for a faithful life is declining in America because many are finding spirituality in other ways or at their own pace. Since attendance at religious services has fallen, personal beliefs are becoming more individualized and people would rather practice their faith in the way that they see fit. They’re looking into new ways to express their spirituality that don’t always involve praying every single day.

Strong Sense of American Pride

Sadly, the number of Americans who feel extremely proud of their country compared to previous decades is decreasing, which is mostly due to political divisions & social issues. Younger generations often express less patriotic feelings than older adults and they’re starting to rethink what patriotism means in the modern world. Our sense of national identity is evolving, for better or worse.

One of the reasons people’s patriotism is disappearing is that fewer Americans believe that the United States is unquestionably the greatest nation on earth. People are more aware of the country’s problems and acknowledge that other nations are doing better in terms of quality of life, for example. More people understand that while the U.S. has many strengths, it’s not perfect.

Unquestioned Support for the Military

Respect for service members still remains high, yet people are more critical of military actions & policies, with debates over defense spending making Americans more cautious. Trust in military leadership has also changed and people are now more likely to question decisions made by those in charge. They no longer offer automatic support for every choice the military makes, although we still tend to see veterans in a positive light.

Belief in an International Helping Role for the United States

A similar belief that’s disappearing is the idea that the U.S. should take on the role of the world’s main helper—more people think the country should focus on domestic issues before getting involved internationally. Americans generally have less support for foreign aid and military interventions abroad than they once did. This change in beliefs comes as a direct result of how we are reassessing our national responsibilities & resources.

The Death Penalty Is Needed

More Americans are questioning the idea of whether capital punishment is effective or fair, which is mostly because they’re worried about issues like wrongful convictions & racial disparities. Ethical issues have also caused decreased support in the death penalty and several states have abolished it altogether. Younger people are more supportive of alternative sentences like life imprisonment without parole, along with changes to the justice system entirely.

Kids Do Best When Mom Stays Home

The idea that kids only thrive when mom stays home is losing steam, as many families have both parents working—it’s clear that children do well in different setups. Some dads have taken on more caregiving roles while moms are pursuing careers, making parenting more of a shared effort. This is partly because of economic factors but also because the difference in personal goals is changing people’s choices.

Men Should Be the Main Breadwinners

Likewise, many Americans no longer believe that men should be the main breadwinners because more women are becoming the primary earners in their families. In fact, according to one study, mothers are the sole or primary earners in 40% of U.S. households with children (1). Gender equality is progressing in the workplace and this means that financial roles at home have changed—families are choosing setups that work best for them.

Divorce Is Immoral

Fewer people see divorce as immoral these days because they now recognize that sometimes relationships just don’t work out—in those situations, ending an unhappy marriage can be the healthier choice. Laws like no-fault divorce make it easier for couples to split without assigning blame and we encourage people to find fulfillment over sticking to a marriage that isn’t working. The stigma around divorce has significantly decreased to allow people to live more authentic lives.

“A Good, Hard Spanking” Builds Character

Lots of Americans have moved away from physical punishment like spanking to support other methods of discipline instead, which is mostly due to research showing the negative effects of physical punishment. It causes negative effects like increased aggression and anxiety in children—that’s why organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics advise against it. As a result, some families support other methods like positive reinforcement, time-outs & open communication instead.

Every Bride Takes Her Husband’s Name

The tradition of every bride taking her husband’s last name isn’t as common anymore, with many women keeping their maiden names or even having their husbands take their last name. Some couples get creative and come up with a brand-new surname together because they want to show how they’re united. Couples have decided to do what works best for them without feeling tied to old traditions—the focus is on personal choice & what feels right.

Support for Keeping Daylight Saving Time

It may be something that we do every year, yet many Americans are losing support for daylight saving time, as they believe changing the clocks twice a year is a hassle. Some people have suggested eliminating daylight saving time entirely by sticking to one time year-round. In states like Florida and California, the government has passed measures to stop the time change, but they need federal approval.

Accepting Medical Testing on Animals

It’s no secret that lots of us feel uneasy about how animals are treated in labs, which is why we’re questioning the need for animal testing. New technology has allowed alternatives like computer simulations & cell cultures to become cruelty-free options instead, while organizations like PETA and the Humane Society have had numerous campaigns against animal testing. We have a much greater awareness of animal welfare now and we’re pushing for more humane methods in science.
