Some grocery shops are charging way more than they need to. This makes it difficult for people to save money. Although they provide customers with quality goods or even a great shopping experience, prices don’t always match the value. These stores often overcharge for things we use every day such as milk, bread, and vegetables. Whether it is due to branding, location or unique products – these stores stretch your budget more than necessary. Here is a closer look at some stores with high prices.

Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods is a store that sells organic and high-quality foods, but customers often see steep prices. Everyday products such as fruits, vegetables and pantry items have very high markups. Some even refer to it as “Whole Paycheck” since costs start adding up so quickly. The selection is good – but a lot of these items can be found elsewhere for a lot less.
Erewhon Market

Erewhon has trendy, health-conscious products such as adaptogenic beverages and superfoods but it’s not cheap. The price of one smoothie could be the price of a whole meal in a nice restaurant. This high-end chain has luxury branding & exclusive merchandise to make the prices sound reasonable. However – it’s impractical for regular groceries.

The Fresh Market

There is an inviting feel to The Fresh Market – but it’s expensive for a budget-conscious shopper. Things such as dairy, meats and fresh fruits are more expensive than in other shops. Although their prepared meals and bakery items are exceptional in taste — it’s hard not to notice the premium price compared to competitors.
Gelson’s Markets

Going to Gelson’s is entering a gourmet grocery store but for a premium price. Even the simplest things like bottled water or crackers can cost a fortune. And while the service and cleanliness are second to none, even a quick grocery run can cost a small fortune. Gelson’s feels less like a supermarket and more like a boutique.
Dean & DeLuca

Dean & DeLuca specializes in gourmet food that comes at an expensive price. Even a small box of chocolates or wedge of cheese can feel like an indulgence instead of a necessity. With their special collection of rare and luxury goods, this is a shop best for one-time events instead of every week.
Central Market

Central Market is great if you’re looking for diversity and unique foods but it’s not cheap. Food such as freshly made bread or imported spices can easily cost too much. They have a pretty extensive product offering, but many people struggle to spend money on everyday needs.
Wegmans

Wegmans has great prices and a huge selection, but grocery bills begin to add up fast. Gourmet products, ready meals and bakery products are especially expensive. Although it is fun, it does not necessarily offer the best value for money.
Trader Joe’s (Specialty Items)

Trader Joe’s is known for their quirky branding and unique snacks, but there are products that feel overpriced. Imported foods, frozen meals and specialty drinks sometimes come with more expensive prices than their competitors. The shop is popular but it’s not always the cheapest spot for basic groceries.
Publix (GreenWise Products)

Publix’s GreenWise line appeals to those who prefer organic and natural products, but the prices are problematic. Everyday grocery goods packaged with this tag usually cost a lot more than those that are produced elsewhere. Although they provide excellent customer service and quality products — the premium on these items is not always justified.
Harris Teeter

Harris Teeter has a great selection and makes it convenient to shop, but the prices can put you off. Everyday items, especially fresh meats & vegetables, are much more expensive than those in the local grocery. Although quality is acceptable, budget-conscious customers may be more limited here than elsewhere.
