With rising tariffs, groceries have become expensive for many middle-class families. Trade taxes have made imported produce (such as fruit, vegetables & packaged food) more expensive. That has raised the cost of everyday staples like bread, milk and canned goods. More and more families are struggling to manage their grocery budgets – this affects the quality and quantity of the food they can buy.

Tariffs on imported clothing have also increased the costs of buying new clothes for middle-class households. Prices of everyday clothing items — like jeans, shirts, shoes and the like — have risen dramatically, due to the additional costs of import duties on other countries’ products. For families who are used to affordable clothing, these price increases mean they either have to buy less or look for lower-quality alternatives.

Electronics

Electronics, from smartphones to appliances, have also gotten more expensive thanks to tariffs on foreign goods. The middle classes now have to pay higher prices for what was once affordable – for example, items like televisions, laptops & refrigerators. The result is that families must either postpone purchases or settle for older models – which affects their capacity to stay up to date with technology.

Furniture

Prices of furniture have risen due to import duties on wood, materials and finished products. Middle-class households who had previously had easy access to affordable furniture to furnish their houses are now unable to do so without breaking the bank. Even everyday items such as sofas, tables, and chairs are getting expensive – so families are delaying the new furniture purchase or going for cheaper ones.

Automobiles

Automobiles are more expensive because of the tariffs on foreign parts and cars.  Middle-class families that were once able to buy cars cheaply now face higher car prices whether it is a new or used vehicle. That has made it harder for people to upgrade cars or even buy their first car – this leads to longer car ownership and compromising on old models.

Home Appliances

Tariffs on dishwashers, washing machines and air conditioners also make it difficult for middle-class households to upgrade or replace household appliances. These goods, once affordable, are now so expensive that most households can no longer afford them. It has pushed back the purchase of necessary items or opting for second-hand items.

Building Materials

For homeowners who wish to renovate or build homes, tariffs on imported construction products have rendered that work much more expensive. Things such as lumber, cement and steel are now more expensive – the whole house project will cost more money. Middle-class households planning home improvements or repairs are now paying much more than they should have and are being forced to postpone or cancel.

Toys and Games

The tariffs on imported toys and games raised the prices of daily items for children. Dolls, board games and learning toys, once affordable to middle-class households, are now out of reach for some. Parents can no longer afford to purchase their children these things without giving up on other essentials.

Health and Beauty Products

Even routine beauty and health products such as shampoo, soap and over-the-counter drugs have become more expensive due to tariffs. These are products that a lot of middle-class families rely on. They are now more expensive at the supermarket, and it is becoming increasingly hard to stick to budgets for personal care. Families might have to choose less effective alternatives, with affects their overall well-being.

Pet Care Products

Pet products — food, grooming products, toys — also cost more as a result of import tariffs. This is bad news for middle-class families who own pets, because caring for them has gotten more expensive. Most pet owners are having to reduce their costs or make do with less – this is damaging to the health and comfort of their pets.

Fuel

Tariffs have raised fuel prices, raising the cost of living for a family in the middle class. Petrol prices are up and it’s more expensive to commute, drive or run errands. The higher cost of fuel adds up over time and becomes financially overwhelming for the families who are accustomed to using their car for their daily activities. It has even caused some families to change their routes or cut down on fuel use.
