When you hit up your local warehouse club, it’s easy to think you’re getting the deal of the century with those giant carts & bulk items. But hold on a minute. Sometimes, what looks like a steal can end up costing you more than you bargained for. That’s why we’re looking at ten common products that aren’t such good buys after all—bigger isn’t always better!

Pre-packaged Produce

It feels good to load up on those big packs of fruits & vegetables because you think you’re all set for healthy eating for weeks. Unfortunately, it might not work out that way. Such large quantities often mean some of that produce goes bad before you even get a chance to eat it. So, what you thought was saving you money is actually just turning into waste.
Spices in Large Containers

Spices don’t stay fresh forever, even though buying that jumbo bottle of paprika might seem smart money-wise. If it takes you a year to get through it, you’ll find it doesn’t pack the same punch by the end because spices lose their flavor over time. Of course, for those who are running a restaurant, it’s a different story — but for everyone else, you’re probably better off sticking with smaller containers.

Diapers

Diapers in bulk seem like a smart choice and especially when you think about how many you go through. However, babies grow like weeds. They might outgrow the diapers before you use up your stash & suddenly, you’re stuck with a mountain of diapers that are too small—and can’t be returned. You should always think about how fast your baby is growing before buying in bulk.
Condiments

If you have a thing for giant bottles of ketchup or mayo, you should be careful. These condiments have expiration dates, so you may not use them as quickly as you might think. Unless you’re sure to use them up before they go bad, that big bottle is not the best investment. Going with a smaller bottle will help you avoid tossing half of it in the trash.
Sunscreen

Sunscreen also loses its effectiveness over time. If you buy more than you can use in a season, you might find that it doesn’t protect you as well next year. That means you’ll end up buying new sunscreen sooner! Essentially, buying cases of the stuff won’t save you any money or protect your skin any better in the long run.
Supplements and Vitamins

Supplements & vitamins also have problems with shelf-life. These products are great for your health—but only if they maintain their potency. If you stock up and can’t use them before their expiration date, you’ll be left with a bunch of pills that won’t deliver the health boost you’re counting on.
Electronics and Appliances

It’s easy to be tempted by the price of electronics & appliances at warehouse clubs. Unfortunately, these items are often older models. That might be okay for some, but for those who like keeping up with technology, these deals might not be as good as they look. You should think carefully about what you’re giving up for that lower price tag.
Designer Clothing

Let’s face it—those designer clothes on the warehouse racks definitely catch your eye with their prices! However, they’re often from past seasons or might have small flaws. If that wasn’t bad enough, the choices are usually hit-or-miss, so finding something that’s just right for you can be hard. It’s not a bargain if it ends up sitting in your closet because it’s not quite what you wanted.
Snack Foods

Buying snacks in bulk seems like a good idea when they have such a low price tag. The truth is, though, having a huge bag of chips will lead to you either overeating or throwing them out once they go stale. Neither is great for your health or your wallet. As such, you should really think about whether the snacks are worth it before going big.
Baking Ingredients

If you’re not baking every weekend, those huge bags of flour or sugar might not be the deal you think they are. These ingredients can go bad—or worse, they’ll attract pests if you don’t store them properly and use them relatively quickly. Throwing out pantry staples is as frustrating & wasteful as it sounds.
