Pets give us joy and comfort. Because of this love, comfort, and understanding, we sometimes view pets to be better companions than humans.
It’s wonderful to have a good connection with your pet, but there comes a point when that closeness might become too much. Leaning on your pet for every emotional need can foster unhealthy habits.
These eight signs may indicate that you are too emotionally dependent on your pet.

You Prioritize Your Pet Over Human Relationships
If you cancel plans or refuse to leave your pet just so that you can be around them all the time, this is an indication of some kind of emotional dependency. Your pets make great company, but you should also make time for human relationships.
If your pet is the only thing that gives you a sense of comfort and you have trouble interacting with other humans, this might be a sign that you are using your pet as a sort of crutch.
You Feel Extreme Anxiety When Away from Your Pet
Everyone misses their pet when they are not around. But if you start feeling really anxious or panicky anytime you leave them for longer periods of time, this is a red flag.
You might feel anxious that something terrible will happen to your pet or you might not be able to focus on anything else when you’re away from them. You might scramble to get back.
Even a brief separation can prove to be nerve-wracking. This makes you unable to enjoy your life.
Talking About Your Pet Constantly
People love telling stories about their pets, but if you repeatedly end up discussing your pet in conversation, it shows emotional dependence.
It’s fine to love your pet; it’s equally important to have other interests and talk about them with your friends, family, and coworkers. When all you can do is talk about your beloved pet, others might find you boring and weird.
Your Mood Depends on Your Pet’s Behavior
If your mood swings up and down based on your pet’s behavior, this shows you’re too emotionally attached. For example, you might be in a bad mood because your pet ignored you or is less than affectionate one day.
Animals have moods just like humans, and it is not fair to tie your state of mind to how your pet behaves. Otherwise, you will be on an emotional rollercoaster based on your pet’s day to day behavior.
You Avoid Doing Things Because of Your Pet
If you are avoiding trips, outings, or even simple errands because you do not want to leave your pet alone, this is a sign of over-attachment. You must always balance your pet’s needs with your own.
If you keep turning down activities/opportunities because of your pet, it can stunt your personal growth and development.
You Feel Like Your Pet is the Only One Who Understands You
Most pet owners are very attached to their pets. But if you feel like your pet is the only one who really understands you, that could be a clue of emotional dependency.
Although pets can offer us companionship and unconditional love, they do not provide the same complex emotional support that we expect from human beings.
If you find it hard to relate to people, it might be time to explore ways to build stronger connections with the humans around you.
You Feel Jealous or Competitive About Others’ Pets
If you feel jealous of other people’s pets or are consistently comparing your pet to others, you’re probably too attached.
You might think that your pet is better behaved or cuter. Or you might take offense if others praise someone else’s pet. Loving your pet is completely fine, but turning it into a competition is not.
You Idealize Your Pets
When you believe your pet is perfect and never does anything wrong, you’re idealizing your pet. It is easy to make them heroes since they make us happy. But pets have their flaws, just like humans.
They may chew on things that they shouldn’t and may get into trouble randomly. One main quality of being a responsible pet owner is to acknowledge these faults.
