16 retro things that people want to bring back

A lot of stuff that used to be everywhere suddenly vanished over the years, but not because these things were bad. They just got replaced. People didn’t make a big deal about them back then, yet now, nostalgia has many people wishing for things to make a return. Here are sixteen of these things. Which of these would you like to bring back & actually use?

1. Glass milk bottles delivered to your door

Once upon a time, milk just showed up, in glass bottles, right on your doorstep. It’s mostly a thing of the past now, although some smaller dairies still offer this, for a fee. It’s not just the novelty of getting it delivered, though. Milk just tastes a lot better when it comes in a glass. You can’t deny it.

2. Rotary phones

Sure, those chunky rotary phones weren’t fast. But spinning that dial felt so satisfying, even if it did take forever to call someone, because it made you commit to doing so. Some people are trying to restore old ones or mod them to work with Bluetooth now. Why? Because they’re fun. That’s it.

3. Drive-in diners with curb service

The drive-thrus where someone shouts at you through a speaker have nothing on the old diners. They had roller-skating servers who’d bring your food straight to your window, whether it was a burger or a milkshake. Honestly, it was pretty cool. A few places still do it, of course. But they’re far & few between.

4. Mechanical flip clocks

Every minute, the number cards on a mechanical flip clock would flip over. They weren’t quiet, but somehow, that soft clicking sound was a little relaxing. Most people would rather get a digital clock these days because they’re a lot more advanced. But there’s something to be said about the older clocks, perhaps “so quaint.” We miss that.

5. Roller rinks with disco lights

Anyone who couldn’t skate backward in a circle to a Bee Gees song wasn’t really trying. We still have roller rinks today, but they’re nowhere near as popular as they once were. These places were the perfect spot to hang out with your friends & maybe even go on a date. Let’s bring them back.

6. Typewriters with ink ribbons

Typewriters are heavy & they jam. You also can’t delete a typo. Yet people are still obsessed with them, which could be because there’s something special about hitting the keys & hearing a clacking noise. Yes, there are digital versions, but they can’t compare to the old kind. Not at all.

7. Penny arcades with mechanical games

In the past, penny arcades were one of the best places to socialize. You simply had to drop a penny or a nickel in, then a little machine would give you a strength test or play a cartoon. It was a time before screens & digital everything. No wonder so many people miss them.

8. Malls as social places

But that’s not all for socializing. Yes, malls still exist, but not in the way that people remember, like the one with arcades & loud music. They were places you’d go when you had nowhere to be for hours. It’s this kind of all-day mall life that many people want back, especially since it felt a lot more social than malls today. What a shame.

9. Home economics classes

It’s not only parents who want proper home economics classes to make a comeback, as many teens feel the same way. They wish someone had taught them how to cook a meal & do laundry properly. Sadly, these classes are mostly elective now, or not taught at all. Yet that doesn’t stop people from asking for them. Again & again.

10. McDonald’s deep-fried apple pies

Nothing beats a good old McDonald’s apple pie, and especially the deep-fried kind. They don’t taste the same now that they’re baked. Technically, they are healthier, but they’ve lost a lot of the deliciousness. The demand for them has never really gone away. And for good reason.

11. Jukeboxes in diners and bars

Every time someone posts a picture of a working jukebox, it goes viral. People miss the kind with physical buttons & plastic labels, instead of the modern, touchscreen variety. In fact, some bars & diners have begun bringing their old units out of storage because customers ask for them. They feel so different.

12. Coin-operated laundromat machines

You know the old laundromat machines? The ones where you put in quarters & heard the machine clunk to life? Yeah, people want those back, although not necessarily just for the aesthetic appeal. They just worked, without any beeping menus & blinking error messages. Sometimes simpler is better.

13. Film cameras with manual winding

Despite what you might’ve heard, it’s not only hipsters & photography nerds who want old film cameras back. Many younger people are into them, too. To use one, you have to wind the lever and frame your shot, then wait to see how it turns out. It’s that process that people miss. It was more deliberate.

14. CRT televisions

CRT televisions are also making a comeback, the kind that are big & boxy and have curved glass screens. After all, retro gaming is popular again, and what better way to play these games than on old screens? You just can’t beat that traditional picture style that does what flat screens don’t do. And they never will.

15. Boomboxes with dual cassette decks

Old-school boomboxes allowed you to dub a tape & record the radio, even play music, from the same device. There was no need to worry about apps or passwords. It’s this kind of simplicity, along with the physicality of the buttons, that many people want back. A mini Bluetooth speaker? That doesn’t compare.

16. Reel-to-reel tape recorders

Similarly, reel-to-reel tape recorders were a great way to archive music & play back tape collections. Some of these don’t even exist in digital format. As such, it’s no surprise that these gadgets are making a comeback. The demand for blank tape has grown, too, since the sound is different, but so is the whole process. It felt more real.
