11 of the worst natural disasters of the 21st century

It doesn’t matter where a natural disaster strikes, as you can be sure that it’ll change countless lives & destroy communities. Mother Nature has a way of turning even the largest of cities into rubble. In light of that, here are eleven of the worst natural disasters of the twenty-first century. Which of these do you remember?

1. Indian Ocean earthquake (2004)

Anyone old enough to remember this earthquake probably remembers how destructive it was, too. The earthquake measured 9.1 on the Richter Scale, and the resulting tsunami killed over 227,000 people. There was no warning & no time. People across Indonesia and even as far as East Africa felt the destruction. It was pure chaos.

2. Cyclone Nargis (2008)

Not many people outside of Asia have heard about Cyclone Nargis, but they should’ve. It hit Myanmar in 2008 and was utterly brutal, killing over 130,000 people. In fact, it struck with such strong wind & dumped so much water that the low-lying delta areas disappeared. Help didn’t arrive all that quickly, either. What a mess.

3. Haiti earthquake (2010)

Everything stopped in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, and the country has never really recovered. The 7.0 earthquake struck near the capital and leveled the place, pancaking buildings on top of each other. Worst of all, there was no clean water for days. The quake destroyed everything.

4. Tōhoku earthquake (2011)

Japan is no stranger to earthquakes, yet the 2011 Tōhoku one was a different story. It was a 9.0 earthquake that hit offshore and caused an enormous tsunami that erased entire towns. But that’s not all. The Fukushima nuclear plant melted down, causing evacuations & mass panic. One disaster? Try three.

5. Kashmir earthquake (2005)

The 2005 Kashmir earthquake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale, and it struck the mountains of northern Pakistan rather viciously. In fact, it was so strong that some remote towns disappeared entirely, while many roads were buried under landslides. Tens of thousands of people were killed. They never stood a chance.

6. Typhoon Haiyan (2013)

Most typhoons hit quite hard, but Typhoon Haiyan did a lot more than that. It exploded in the Philippines. The wind speeds reached nearly 200 mph & storm surges transformed streets into rivers. Sadly, over 6,000 people died as a result, and the recovery process took years. The storm broke many records. But the wrong kind.

7. European heatwave (2003)

This next one involves no fires & no floods, just unbearable heat. It was in 2003, and many European people died due to the heatwave that struck the continent. This wasn’t merely hot weather, though. AC isn’t that common in Europe, especially in older buildings, and many older people were stuck inside without any way to cool down. Heat kills.

8. Pakistan floods (2010)

The monsoon rains came to Pakistan in 2010 like normal, but they didn’t stop. The heavy rain actually caused the Indus River to burst its banks, which eventually led to the water spilling into cities & villages across the country. It affected over 20 million people and killed nearly 1,900 people, while a fifth of the country ended up underwater. Not exaggerating.

9. Nepal earthquake (2015)

The 2015 Nepal earthquake struck the country’s capital, Kathmandu, and caused centuries-old temples to collapse. Worst of all, the aftershocks shook people’s nerves for weeks afterward. Entire villages vanished before rescuers were even able to find them. All that history, gone. In seconds.

10. Australian bushfires (2019-2020)

It’s not unusual for Australia to experience bushfires. But on this scale? The forest burned for months and torched everything in sight, including homes & farms. The animals didn’t stand a chance, nor did the people. People were forced to wear masks just to breathe. Imagine that.

11. Hurricane Katrina (2005)

There’s no denying that Hurricane Katrina was bad. However, what really wrecked New Orleans was what came after. Namely, the levees failed & water poured in, which drowned whole neighborhoods. Thousands of people were left to get help in the Superdome, and even that took way too long to arrive. It was an absolute breakdown. On every level.
