Fame can come from practically anywhere these days, but it turns out that some of the most famous faces on the planet are actually behind bars.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs
Sean Combs, aka P Diddy, seemed to be everywhere during the early 2000s. He had hit records and fashion lines, as well as famous parties, but there was a darker side that wasn’t so public. At least, not until recently.
P Diddy was convicted of transporting people for prostitution and sentenced to 50 months behind bars in October 2025. That wasn’t the only claim against him, he was accused of racketeering conspiracy and trafficking, too. But he was cleared of those charges.
R. Kelly
The thing with R. Kelly’s prison time is that it comes from two federal cases. He was first given 30 years by a New York judge for racketeering and trafficking in 2022. But then, he was also given a 20-year sentence by a Chicago judge for child abuse material.
Nineteen years of the Chicago term will run at the same time as the New York term, and one year will run afterward. In other words, he’ll be in federal custody for around 31 years. He’ll be locked up well into the 2040s, quite a different experience from the red carpet.
Harvey Weinstein
There’s so much going on with producer Harvey Weinstein’s legal situation. He was originally convicted in New York and given a 23-year sentence for r**e and other crimes. But then it was overturned in 2024. That led to another trial, with a new conviction for a criminal s***al act.
His New York sentence is still pending, as of July 2026, while over in California, he was sentenced to 16 years. Weinstein is in Rikers Island at the moment, waiting for the New York proceedings to continue.
Danny Masterson
You probably recognize Danny Masterson from That ‘70s Show. But his current situation is nothing to laugh at, as he was convicted of r***ng two women at his Hollywood Hills home in 2003. He was sentenced to 30 years to life for that crime.
Prosecutors did originally bring a third charge, but the jury couldn’t agree on that count. The law in California states that he’ll have to serve at least 25½ years before he can even be considered for parole. His lawyers are still challenging his conviction.
Tory Lanez
It started with a ride home from a party. It ended with Megan Thee Stallion being shot in both feet and rapper Tory Lanez facing three felony charges for doing it. The incident happened in 2020, and jurors convicted Lanez of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
He was also found guilty of carrying an unregistered loaded firearm in a vehicle, and firing it with gross negligence. All of those crimes landed him with a 10-year prison sentence in California. It’s not like he’s had an easy time in prison, either, as he was later stabbed repeatedly by another prisoner in 2025. Lanez survived.
Sam Bankman-Fried
There was a time when Sam Bankman-Fried was sleeping on a beanbag at the office and talking about building a crypto empire. Those days are gone. His company, FTX, collapsed, and somehow, billions of dollars of customer money went missing.
So, a jury convicted him of seven fraud, conspiracy, and money-laundering charges. It turns out that customer funds were being routed through a company called Alameda Research for personal use. That led to him being convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison in March 2024. So much for the beanbags.
Elizabeth Holmes
Elizabeth Holmes’s rise to fame was almost as quick as her fall from it. The blood testing technology she’d been pushing didn’t work as she claimed, and she was later convicted by a jury. She’d defrauded the investors out of billions of dollars, after all.
Her original punishment was 135 months, but that changed in March 2026. A judge lowered that to 123 months because of a federal sentencing-rule change. She’s currently at a minimum-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, a far cry from all the luxury she’s used to.
Ghislaine Maxwell
Ghislaine Maxwell was involved in some of the most horrific crimes in history. That’s not a surprise, given she was moving in wealthy social circles alongside Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell helped him groom and abuse girls, some of whom were only 14 years old.
She was found guilty on five charges in December 2021 and was sentenced to twenty years in federal prison. She’ll also face five years of supervised release. While she’s serving her time at a federal prison camp in Texas right now, Maxwell has continued trying to fight the ruling.
JoaquÃn ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán
It didn’t seem like it’d be possible. But somehow, U.S. authorities managed to catch El Chapo, real name JoaquÃn Guzmán, after he escaped from a Mexican prison. He escaped twice, in fact. American jurors convicted him of running a continuing criminal enterprise and trafficking drugs.
He was also convicted of laundering money and firearms offenses. The punishment for someone as infamous as El Chapo had to be extreme, of course, and he was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years. He has no chance of parole. Security at the federal supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, is about as tight as it gets, so another tunnel escape is unlikely.
Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada
Ismael Zambada, aka El Mayo, was another international criminal who managed to stay out of custody for decades. Then American authorities caught up with him. He came to the U.S. and was arrested in July 2024. Zambada later pleaded guilty to the charges.
These included racketeering conspiracy and operating a continuing criminal enterprise through the Sinaloa cartel. You know, standard criminal stuff. A federal judge sentenced him to life in prison in July 2026, at the age of 76.
Joe Exotic
Netflix made Joe Exotic into a household name, but he was already serving time when that happened. He was born Joseph Maldonado, and convicted of crimes that went beyond his feud with Carole Baskin, including two murder-for-hire counts.
He was also convicted of eight Lacey Act violations and nine Endangered Species Act violations. He’d killed five tigers. Exotic originally received 22 years, but an appeals ruling meant he was resentenced to 21 years. Yes, that’s right, just one year off, not worth it, really.
Suge Knight
Death Row Records was a label that helped to shape 1990s hip-hop, and Suge Knight was right at the center of it. Or, at the top of it, as he was the CEO and founder. But that all came crashing down when he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter. He drove a pickup truck over two men.
One of them, Terry Carter, died, while the other, Cle ‘Bone’ Sloan, was injured. Knight did end up pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter instead of facing a murder trial, and he was sentenced to 28 years. 22 years for the killing, the other six because of California’s three-strikes law.
Robinho
Robinho might’ve played soccer for Brazil and clubs like Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Manchester City, but that meant nothing in the courtroom. The soccer star was convicted by an Italian court for taking part in the group assault of a woman at a nightclub in 2013.
Italy did want him to be extradited to face punishment, but Brazil refused. Italian officials asked Brazil to enforce the sentence instead. The nation agreed. Shortly after, Robinho was arrested, and he’s serving a nine-year prison sentence in a Brazilian prison.
Josh Duggar
The television version of Josh Duggar’s life couldn’t be more different from reality. He was famous for being on the reality show 19 Kids and Counting, but he became infamous after he was convicted of having child abuse material on his computer.
A jury convicted him in December 2021 for that crime, and he received a sentence of just over 12 years in federal prison. He won’t escape punishment once he’s let out, either, as he’ll also get 20 years of supervised release.
Jared Fogle
For years, Jared Fogle sold a simple public image. Subway sandwiches, weight loss, friendly commercials, all that jazz. But then he pled guilty to far less family-friendly crimes in 2015. He admitted he’d received and distributed child abuse material.Â
He also traveled across state lines to pay for acts with minors. The judge eventually sentenced him to fifteen years and eight months, with a lifetime of supervised release following that. Subway cut all ties with him.
Larry Nassar
Former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State doctor Larry Nassar was convicted in 2017 of several horrific crimes. One case involved child abuse material offenses, and another was for trying to destroy evidence. He was sentenced to 60 years for the first few crimes.
Then, the judge added terms of 40 to 175 years and 40 to 125 years for criminal se***l conduct. He has to serve the federal sentence first. To put it another way, he has basically no release date.
