15 celebrities that faded away into obscurity and practically nobody noticed

Hollywood is full of dramatic downfalls, but some celebrities disappear so quietly that nobody notices until years later.

Bridget Fonda

The 1990s were a busy time for Bridget Fonda. Separating herself from her father Peter and grandfather Henry’s legacies, she found success with roles in films like Single White Female, Point of No Return, Jackie Brown, and A Simple Plan. Then it all came to a halt.

Her final role was in the 2002 mini-series Snow Queen, after which she walked away from acting altogether. It’s been over 20 years, and Fonda has shown very little interest in coming back.

Leelee Sobieski

Leelee Sobieski was poised to be one of Hollywood’s next big leading ladies for several years. Still in her teens, she starred in films like Deep Impact, Never Been Kissed, and Eyes Wide Shut. Her role in Joan of Arc also earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. The Glass House and Joy Ride are also among the films she’s been in. Sobieski grew tired of Hollywood and retired from acting in 2012.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Jonathan Taylor Thomas was one of the United States’ biggest teen idols of the 1990s. Millions tuned in each week to watch him play Randy Taylor on Home Improvement. Movies like Man of the House and his voice role as young Simba in The Lion King only increased his fame.

Then, at the height of his popularity, Thomas started to distance himself from Hollywood. He left Home Improvement before the show concluded and focused largely on his education, making only cameo appearances since.

Phoebe Cates

Phoebe Cates appeared destined for a lengthy career as a Hollywood starlet, having become one of the era’s most well-known young actresses throughout the 1980s. Fast Times at Ridgemont High skyrocketed her to fame, and the Gremlins sequels ensured she stayed there.

However, upon marrying actor Kevin Kline and starting a family, Cates slowly retreated from her acting career. She didn’t attempt a big comeback and established herself outside Hollywood for the majority of her life, later founding Blue Tree boutique in NYC.

Michael Schoeffling

Michael Schoeffling was a teen idol after his role as Jake Ryan in the romantic comedy Sixteen Candles in 1984. He later starred in other films like Mermaids and Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken. Schoeffling retired from acting following his last movie in 1991. He began reportedly focusing on woodworking and furniture, preferring to live his life out of the spotlight. Schoeffling hasn’t had much interest in a comeback.

Kelly McGillis

Kelly McGillis was one of the most recognizable actresses of the mid-1980s. After co-starring with Harrison Ford in Witness and earning herself nominations at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs, she became a worldwide star playing Charlie to Tom Cruise’s Maverick in Top Gun. She went on to star in The Accused in 1988. However, McGillis never gravitated towards the longstanding Hollywood fame her early success afforded. Her subsequent appearances grew less frequent and consisted mainly of independent films and projects outside of Hollywood.

Debra Winger

Urban Cowboy, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Terms of Endearment made Debra Winger one of the main actresses of the early 80s. She was nominated for three Oscars and seemed like she could have sustained her major star status forever. Instead, Winger voluntarily walked away from her career for years in the 90s.

Although she later returned and has since continued to appear in films occasionally, she never returned to the constant spotlight that had once been her life.

Alison Lohman

Actress Alison Lohman had a résumé that indicated she would likely have a longer career. She rose to prominence with White Oleander and went on to star alongside box office draws in Matchstick Men, Big Fish, and Things We Lost in the Fire. Then, in 2009, she starred in Sam Raimi’s horror hit Drag Me to Hell. Instead of capitalizing on its success by seeking out larger roles, Lohman essentially retired from acting when she married filmmaker Mark Neveldine and had children.

Linda Fiorentino

Actress Linda Fiorentino was hard to miss in the 1990s. Many got to know her from her award-winning performance in The Last Seduction. Millions more knew her as Dr. Laurel Weaver from Men in Black. Dogma and a few other films followed soon after. However, her roles became few and far between in the early 2000s. Before long, roles just stopped coming to her entirely.

Randy Quaid

For years, Randy Quaid had been a familiar face that audiences knew instantly. The actor had portrayed Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon’s Vacation films, starred in Independence Day, and had previously been nominated for an Academy Award for his early role in The Last Detail.

However, after years of consistent employment in film and television, Quaid found his career overtaken by widely publicized personal scandals and legal issues.

Jack Nicholson

It’s hard to think of many celebrities more iconic than Jack Nicholson. Whether it was One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Shining, Batman, A Few Good Men, or As Good as It Gets, Nicholson was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars for decades. Then he appeared in How Do You Know in 2010 and essentially vanished from filmmaking. There was no signature final performance or publicity-studded retirement tour.

Shelley Duval

Shelley Duvall’s unique face will always be remembered for films like Popeye, Nashville, 3 Women and, of course, The Shining. However, after years of working in Hollywood, she slowly retreated and began living a much quieter life in Texas.

She did return to act in the indie horror movie The Forest Hills, which was shot after Duvall’s approximately 20-year acting break from the industry; however, it was more of a cameo towards the end of her life rather than a Hollywood return. Duvall passed away in 2024, at age 75.

Geena Davis

She was a huge star from the late 1980s to the 1990s. Beetlejuice, The Fly, Thelma & Louise, and A League of Their Own made her a household name. She even won an Academy Award for her role in The Accidental Tourist. However, lead roles for her in films slowly but surely dried up. Davis became active with women’s and girls’ representation in the media, taking on more of a public advocacy role.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Few child stars have ever reached the commercial heights of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. From their start on Full House as babies, the twins built an entertainment empire that included movies, TV shows, books, merchandise, and home videos. By the time they were teenagers, their images had been plastered on virtually every outlet imaginable.

And then they just quit. Ashley’s last high-profile movie with sister Mary-Kate was New York Minute in 2004, but Mary-Kate continued appearing in films until 2011. But by 2012 they had both made it clear they were stepping away from acting and focusing on fashion.

Mena Suvari

Following breakout roles in American Beauty and American Pie in the late 1990s and early 2000s respectively, Suvari became known as a leading Hollywood actress. With teen comedies and indie films falling in and out of favor with studios, Suvari began seeing fewer roles in mainstream films and moved toward low-budget indies and television appearances, out of the spotlight.
