Years of success can take decades to build, yet as these famous people discovered, it can take only minutes to seriously damage it.
The cover-up became the story

Richard Nixon came into his second term with unprecedented power. He won reelection by one of the widest margins in 1972. Then Watergate happened. While the original break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters was bad, it was the cover-up that blew the scandal wide open.
Nixon administration officials tried to obstruct the investigation at every turn, turning Watergate into a constitutional crisis. Eventually, the House Judiciary Committee approved three articles of impeachment. One of these articles was obstruction of justice.
Nixon resigned rather than face near-certain impeachment and removal in August 1974, making him the only president to resign the office.
One rule baseball couldn’t forgive

Pete Rose has more hits than anyone else in Major League Baseball history, though gambling was a part of a legacy he couldn’t shake. In 1989, following an investigation into whether he bet on baseball as the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, Rose agreed to permanently place himself on baseball’s ineligible list. Though the agreement at the time was not technically an admission that Rose bet on baseball, he later conceded that he did.
Rose was kept out of baseball’s traditional Hall of Fame voting process during his lifetime because of the agreement, leaving his accomplishments as one of the game’s all-time greats tarnished.
Talent couldn’t control the chaos

By age 20, Mike Tyson was the youngest boxer to ever win the heavyweight title. For a while, Tyson was unstoppable inside the ring. However, his life outside of it was spiraling out of control. Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992 and served prison time, though he has continued to maintain his innocence.
Later in his career, Tyson was disqualified from a match for biting Evander Holyfield’s ears in 1997, briefly losing his license to box. Tyson would later file for bankruptcy in 2003.
From beloved star to a completely different legacy

Until 1994, O.J. Simpson was a former American sports hero who had crossed over into acting and product endorsements successfully. All that changed when his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were murdered. Simpson was found not guilty in their murders in a criminal trial that captured the world’s attention.
However, he was later found liable for their deaths in a civil trial. Years later, he was charged with a separate incident involving sports memorabilia in Las Vegas. Simpson was found guilty of armed robbery and other charges and served close to nine years in prison.
The image collapsed overnight

Professional golfer Tiger Woods had spent decades cultivating one of sport’s most valuable personal brands. Then, starting in late 2009, news broke that he had multiple extramarital affairs. Woods admitted to cheating, his marriage to Elin Nordegren ended in divorce, and several major sponsors dropped or changed their business relationships with him. The media shield he had so carefully constructed around himself was breached, and his public image was never the same.
Despite injuries and personal setbacks, Woods would later author one of the greatest comeback stories in golf by winning the Masters tournament in 2019.
Seven victories disappeared

Lance Armstrong‘s rise seemed destined for legend. A cancer survivor who had returned to competitive cycling dominated the sport, winning the Tour de France seven times in a row. However, years of doping allegations haunted Armstrong throughout his career, which he adamantly and forcefully denied.
In 2012, the U. S. Anti-Doping Agency released a report alleging a sophisticated doping regimen. Armstrong was subsequently stripped of his seven Tour titles and banned for life from sanctioned competition. He publicly confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs in 2013.
Spending like the hits would never stop

In the early 1990s, MC Hammer was earning about as much money as most entertainers dream about. “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em” was selling wildly and “U Can’t Touch This” was making him famous worldwide. However, his spending increased along with his earnings.
Hammer became notorious for living with a large entourage and a ridiculously expensive lifestyle. This lifestyle included a huge California mansion. When his record sales slowed down, this spending became difficult to keep up. In 1996, Hammer filed for bankruptcy while owing millions of dollars.
The trophies couldn’t protect him

Boris Becker won Wimbledon at the age of 17 in 1985 and became an international tennis superstar practically overnight. Three decades later, he found himself in a very different kind of news story. In 2017, Becker was declared bankrupt in Britain. As part of that process, he was legally obligated to list assets he owned.
In 2022, he was convicted of four charges relating to failing to disclose or surrender those assets, including two financial interests and a loan. He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison. He spent around eight months behind bars before being released and deported from Britain.
The account nobody was supposed to see

Nick Leeson was a young derivatives trader for Barings Bank in Singapore. He started hiding losses in an unauthorized “error account” numbered 88888. Because Leeson controlled both trading and back-office functions that were meant to monitor him, he was able to cover up increasing losses and look profitable. Rather than report losing trades, he continued to place bigger bets in hopes of turning back a profit.
By February 1995, his secret losses totaled about £827 million, more than the bank could cover. The 233-year-old British bank collapsed, and Leeson fled Singapore. He was eventually arrested and imprisoned.
Growth came with a price

Travis Kalanick’s leadership rapidly expanded Uber from startup to globally ubiquitous tech company, but its aggressive work culture led to challenges that threatened Uber’s stability. In February 2017, Uber engineer Susan Fowler released a blog post detailing allegations of harassment and what she claimed was incompetence from the company after she reported it.
Other issues had already begun to plague Uber, and Kalanick further tarnished his reputation when a video of him yelling at an Uber driver went viral.
A subsequent external investigation of Uber’s workplace culture resulted in sweeping recommendations for changes to the company. Kalanick was ultimately forced out by major investors and resigned as CEO in June 2017.
The joke everyone remembered

Businessman Gerald Ratner showed that one doesn’t need crime, money, or an elaborate scheme to make a disastrous decision. Sometimes all you need is a microphone. Ratner headed a very successful chain of jewelry stores in Britain when he gave a speech to the Institute of Directors in 1991. At one point, he ridiculed the quality of some of his cheaper products, including characterizing one as “total crap.”
The gaffe attracted massive publicity and alienated the very customers who were buying those products. Ratner resigned from the company as it limped through the subsequent financial meltdown. His name became so synonymous with folly that in the U.K. “doing a Ratner” became business lexicon for openly destroying your brand’s reputation.
The second chance wasn’t enough

Anthony Weiner’s career might have survived one career-ending scandal. The problem was he kept doing it again. The New York congressman resigned in 2011 after confessing that he had been sending explicit texts and pictures online.
He ran for mayor of New York City two years later, only to have more evidence of texting come to light during the campaign. Still later, the scandal took a criminal turn. In 2017, Weiner pleaded guilty to transferring obscene material to a minor and was sentenced to federal prison for 21 months.
Five Olympic medals, then none

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Marion Jones looked like one of the world’s all-time greatest athletes. She won three gold medals and two bronzes. Jones steadfastly denied using performance-enhancing drugs for years. In 2007, she confessed to it and pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators about her drug use.
In the same court appearance, Jones pleaded guilty to false statements connected to a check-fraud investigation. Jones relinquished her Olympic medals. Her results from Sydney were stricken from the record books. Marion Jones served six months in prison in 2008.
A few minutes he couldn’t take back

Michael Richards was doing stand-up comedy at The Laugh Factory when he lost his temper with hecklers in the crowd. Richards launched into a racist rant that ended up being filmed and going viral. He apologized, but the consequences were massive. Minutes of indiscretion changed how millions viewed an actor best known as the eccentric and lovable weirdo Kramer. Richards shied away from stand-up since then, and his career never quite recovered from the Seinfeld heyday.
The answer that changed everything

Paula Deen had created a successful food business that spread across TV shows, cookbooks, restaurants, and endorsements. During a deposition related to a discrimination lawsuit, she was asked if she had ever used a racial slur. She confirmed she had used the word in the past.
When the deposition went public, things quickly unraveled. Food Network said it would not renew her contract, and several other companies cut ties with her. Even after the lawsuit was dropped, the commercial fallout continued.
The celebration nobody remembered

The 2022 Academy Awards was supposed to be one of Will Smith‘s biggest nights. Instead of celebrating, audiences remember what happened minutes before Smith won his first Oscar. Comedy presenter Chris Rock joked about Jada Pinkett Smith, causing Smith to walk up to the stage and slap Rock live on television.
Smith won Best Actor for King Richard less than an hour later, but the moment was soon forgotten. Smith apologized days later and stepped down from the Academy, which banned him from Academy events for the next 10 years.
