12 social situations men over 40 say they avoid

Turning 40 doesn’t magically change who you are, but it definitely shifts how you spend your time and who you spend it with. Late nights and loud crowds that once felt exciting start to feel like a chore. We asked a bunch of men what social situations they’ve started dodging after hitting 40, and the answers were surprisingly relatable (and sometimes a little funny). Here are 12 events they now politely decline, avoid entirely, or escape from as fast as possible.

Packed nightclubs with crowds

Back then, packing into a hot, sweaty club and shouting at each other to hear over the booming music felt like fun. After 40, most guys would prefer to just sit at a bar, drinking and talking without feeling trapped or overhearing the same song on repeat for hours. Standing in line at 11 p.m. to get into a club? That’s a hard pass.

Bachelor parties in Vegas

Drinking all night, spending a ton of money on bottle service, and getting little sleep for a few days is no longer worth the two weeks it takes to recover. A weekend of fishing or golfing with friends is more their speed these days

The idea of impressing 20+ strangers in three-minute conversations is a nightmare. One has to be at one’s most charming and comfortable to do it, and most men simply aren’t willing to put themselves through that pressure anymore. If they’re going to meet a woman, they want it to happen naturally or through mutual friends.

Group tours with strangers

Whether it’s a bus tour across Europe or a cruise with a huge group, having to be tied to a rigid schedule with a bunch of strangers is a huge turn off. Traveling after 40 is more about having an experience on your own terms, so many men in their 40s are opting for solo trips or traveling with only a few close friends instead of dealing with the drama and forced conversations.

Standing in line for midnight movie premieres

Waiting for hours in line for a midnight premiere of a new blockbuster movie was something to brag about in their 20s. By 40, they would rather wait to stream it in the comfort of their own homes instead. Bragging rights are just not worth it.

Going to baby showers or gender reveal parties

Some men go out of politeness, but after 40, many politely bow out of events like baby showers and gender reveals, especially if they don’t know the couple well. Sitting through games and awkward small talk just isn’t how they want to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Fantasy football draft parties

Fantasy football isn’t bad, but some of the excess that goes along with it is a little much. Sitting around with a group of friends all day drinking, trash talking, and watching them absolutely trash each other is exhausting.

Theme parks with huge crowds

Spending a full day standing in long lines under the sun is a young person’s game. After 40, many men avoid amusement parks unless it’s for their kids—and even then, they plan for the least crowded days possible. Comfort and sanity matter more now.

Overpriced charity galas

Guys don’t like wearing tuxedos anymore. Nor do they like mingling with a group of strangers and pretending to have fun while eating a rubber chicken dinner. After 40, many men will simply choose to donate money to the cause rather than physically attend these charity events and inflate some person’s ego.

Holiday mall madness

Going to the mall on Black Friday or the weekend before Christmas used to feel like a tradition. Now, men in their 40s would rather shop online from the peace of their living room. Avoiding the chaos is worth every penny.

Karaoke nights with coworkers

Singing karaoke in front of coworkers used to sound like a blast. But after 40, it suddenly feels a lot more embarrassing than it did a decade ago. Mature men would rather skip those nights out and keep work and personal lives separate.

Weddings of distant acquaintances

When every weekend is filled with weddings, the excitement wears off. These men over 40 are more likely to politely decline invites from coworkers or distant cousins. They save their time and money for people they’re really close to.
