12 incidents of employers punishing people over personal opinions

In today’s hyper-connected world, it’s very easy to express our opinions on just about everything. We sometimes don’t even realize when what we think as personal opinions become political speech. When these opinions clash with workplace policies and public image, the consequences are unavoidable.

In recent years, we can’t help but notice that employers have increasingly taken action against employers whose words, in both public and personal spaces, have sparked outrage or controversy. The following cases (gathered from news reports and other reliable sources) show just how quickly a public comment or social media post can cost someone their job.

Texas State University – professor fired over socialist speech

Professor Tom Alter was dismissed from Texas State University in 2025 for calling for the “overthrow” of oppressive forces at a socialist group meeting. The professor was quoted as saying that “systemic change” was necessary. The university said it fired Alter because his comments were inflammatory and caused safety concerns, whereas the professor maintained that he was fired for his political beliefs.

The University of South Dakota suspended Prof. Phillip Michael Hook after describing Charlie Kirk as “hate-spreading” on Facebook in the wake of Kirk’s assassination. However, a federal judge has ordered his temporary reinstatement while the case proceeds.

ESPN – anchor Jemele Hill suspended over Trump tweets

Another interesting case where an employee was punished over political speech was ESPN anchor Jemele Hill. In 2017, she was suspended after tweeting that then-President Donald Trump was a “white supremacist.” ESPN stated that her tweets violated the company’s social media policy and risked alienating viewers. Hill later left the network but defended her comments as personal political opinions made outside her reporting duties.

NYU Langone Hospital – nurse fired over Gaza speech

Hesen Jabr, a nurse at NYU Langone Hospital, lost her job in 2024 after using the word “genocide” to describe the Gaza war during an award acceptance speech. Hospital leadership claimed that she had already been warned in the past not to make political statements on behalf of the institution.

They also argued that her remarks created tension among both staff and patients. The incident quickly gained national attention, sparking debate about political speech in the healthcare field.

Google – internal debate turns public

In 2018, Google dismissed one of its engineers, Tim Chevalier, for making several critical posts about the company’s policies and politics that had previously been internal discussions. He later claimed he was fired because of his progressive views, whereas Google argued the employee was fired for harassment and violations of company rules.

Lucasfilm – actress Gina Carano dropped

Actress Gina Carano was cut from Disney’s Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, in 2021 after a series of social media posts where she compared the treatment of conservative individuals to the persecution of Jewish people during World War II. Disney said the posts were inappropriate, but Carano claimed she was being censored for her beliefs.

Massachusetts teacher fired for old social media posts

A Massachusetts school district recently let go of one of its teachers, Kari MacRae. She was fired just one month after her hiring when old posts on her social media profiles surfaced that others found to be discriminatory or offensive. Courts have so far upheld the firing, saying that the posts could cause disruption at schools. In fact, the US Supreme Court refused to hear her case in 2025.

ABC – radio host terminated for Gaza post

Consequences of political speech are not just limited to the United States. In 2023, ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) took radio personality Antoinette Lattouf off air after posting about the Israel-Gaza conflict on her Instagram account. A federal court later ruled that she was terminated because of her political beliefs and awarded her AUD 150,000 in damages.

Nasdaq – employee fired over social media post

In September 2025, Nasdaq fired an employee whose social media post following Charlie Kirk’s assassination was deemed to encourage violence. The company said it had a zero-tolerance policy for employees’ speech that incited acts of violence.

Historian claims college punished him for political views

Historian Michael Phillips accused Collin College in Texas of retaliating against him for his outspoken political views. He claimed that his contract wasn’t renewed because he publicly criticized Confederate monuments and spoke out about systemic racism. The college denied the claims, but the situation drew national attention and sparked debates about academic freedom.

Shirley Sherrod forced to resign over edited video

In 2010, USDA official Shirley Sherrod was pressured to resign after a video clip surfaced that appeared to show her making racist remarks. The clip was later revealed to be misleading and taken out of context, but by then, she had already been forced out of her position. The government eventually apologized and offered her another role, admitting the firing was a mistake.

Washington Post journalist fired after Twitter clash

Reporter Felicia Sonmez was fired by the Washington Post after a public dispute with several coworkers on Twitter drew widespread attention. The Post said Sonmez violated policies by disparaging her coworkers in a public forum. The Post reporter subsequently accused others at the newspaper of being involved in her termination due to political divisions in the newsroom.
