If you’re like most people, you have a black hole in your house where your things suddenly vanish. One moment they’re right in front of you, and the next they’ve disappeared without a trace. We chatted with a few people and compiled a list of household objects that are so good at hiding that it feels like they’re playing a game with us. So here are 11 things that always seem to go missing in U.S. homes.

Socks

No list like this can start without socks. Somehow, one always makes it into the wash while the other vanishes into thin air. People blame the dryer, but nobody’s ever caught it in the act.
TV remotes

One minute it’s on the coffee table, the next it’s wedged between couch cushions or hiding under the dog. Families often spend more time searching for the remote than actually deciding what to watch.
Phone chargers

Chargers mysteriously migrate from one room to another and eventually disappear altogether. Borrowing and “forgetting to return it” is often the real culprit, but it doesn’t make the hunt any less frustrating.
Scissors

Most homes have more than one pair of scissors. But when you really need them, they’re nowhere to be found. One minute, they are in the kitchen drawer. Next, they have “walked” over to the garage and then to one of the random desks in bedrooms.
Pens

Pens have a talent for walking away. You’ll buy a whole pack, but by the end of the month, not a single one can be found. They end up in purses, cars, and mysteriously at other people’s houses.
Hair ties

Those with long hair know that hair ties are a total nightmare. You have a whole bunch in your hair drawer, but not one of them shows up when you actually need it. And where do they go? The bottom of bags, under couches, and all over the floor.
Lids for food containers

The containers stay, but the lids? Gone. Somehow, they vanish into the same black hole as socks. This unfortunately leaves you with a drawer full of mismatched plastic.
Keys

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a house key, car key, or mailbox keys. They all love to disappear. They’re usually in the last place you’d think to look… or in the exact place you swore you already checked.
Tape

When you don’t need it, tape shows up in every drawer. But as soon as a birthday gift or school project comes around, the roll goes missing like it’s hiding on purpose.
Umbrellas

Umbrellas practically exist to be forgotten. They stay in the car until you need them while walking, and when you move them inside, it suddenly rains while you’re driving. A vicious cycle.
Nail clippers

No matter how many pairs of nail clippers a person owns, if you look for them when you need them, they will all be gone. Finding one feels like an Easter egg hunt, and they’re usually in the last place you’ll look, like buried in a travel bag.
