10 time capsules that revealed secrets when opened

Most time capsules are meant to preserve the past, but it turns out, some pieces contained shocking items, hidden away underground all this time.

Lessons sealed under a Nazi school

Workers in what’s now Złocieniec, Poland, buried a copper cylinder beneath Ordensburg Krössinsee in 1934. Ordensburg was a Nazi training school at the time. Then, in 2016, researchers finally uncovered the time capsule, although it took some difficulty. They were worried that old explosives might still be nearby.

But the most horrifying part came when they opened the capsule, as they found newspapers and coins from the Nazis. They also discovered vital founding documents from the fascist party and two copies of Mein Kampf. Essentially, it was a snapshot of what future Nazi Party leaders were taught to admire. How chilling.

Hair went into the cornerstone

In 2020, North Carolina workers removed the Confederate Soldiers Monument in Raleigh. That was the start of the problem. They were surprised to find there was actually a metal box hidden inside the base, So, they opened it.

The actual monument had been placed in 1894, making the time capsule over 126 years old. The workers found the usual stuff inside, like money and buttons, as well as songbooks and flags. But there was also a lock of Robert E. Lee’s hair and hair from the tail of his horse, Traveler. Yes, really. It was a blast from the past that truly nobody was expecting to find.

The dates didn’t add up

Former mayor Johan Nygaard left instructions in 1912 for how to open a mysterious Norwegian package. Officials eventually opened it a hundred years later in Otta on August 24. Everything seemed normal at first, since it contained letters and receipts, as well as newspapers and other documents from the period.

At least, it seemed normal. People looked closer and found that one newspaper was dated 1914, and another was from 1919. In other words, someone must’ve opened the package before they were supposed to, for some reason. They never found out who did it, or why.

Doctors left a film behind

A construction crew was working at the old Central State Hospital grounds in Indianapolis in 2015 when they stumbled upon a time capsule. It was dated July 23, 1958, and was buried there during construction of the Bahr Treatment Center. It had all your regular time-capsule material like newspapers and photographs, along with footage of the groundbreaking ceremony.

But there was more. The capsule also contained filmed messages from the doctors at the time, talking directly to psychiatrists of the future about what they were doing. They spoke about psychiatric drugs and electroshock treatment. In fact, they asked how future doctors would view these treatments, and that’s pretty eerie.

Letters arrived in the wrong future

Soviet citizens wrote letters in 1967 that went into a time capsule, designed to be opened 50 years later. The capsule was opened in 2017, and the researchers were quite surprised to see what the citizens wrote about. They thought communism would be just fine.

One writer from Novosibirsk actually wrote about how they were helping build communism, and believed the readers would be living under it. They imagined there’d be settlements on the Moon and missions to Mars. It’s kind of ironic, because by 2017, the Soviet Union itself had been gone for 26 years.

The flag was already wrong

President Woodrow Wilson was one of the attendees at the laying of the Arlington National Cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater’s cornerstone on October 13, 1915. Officials opened the time capsule from it over a century later, and there was something unusual inside.

There was a little American flag among the usual time-capsule things. But the strange thing was that it only had 46 stars. That would’ve made sense if the capsule was buried before Arizona and New Mexico joined the Union. But it was sealed in 1915, long after the United States had 48 states.

Hoover was waiting inside

It took a while for people to notice the time capsule at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tampa Bay. The welded copper box had been sitting there for some time, until staff eventually found it in September 2026. They were preparing for a centennial exhibit.

They opened it to discover that the capsule was from 1962 and had photos from the Interbay Boys Club on South Coolidge Avenue. There were also speeches inside talking about the Cold War, along with a cigar. But the most surprising part was that it had a telegram inside from none other than former President Herbert Hoover. Nobody was expecting to see something like that.

A newspaper carried a grim local story

Orlando officials opened a rusty box on August 8, 2017, and at first, they saw Confederate money and little flags. They also found three newspapers dated February 9, 1911. That was where things got strange.

One of these papers included a local story about a man in poor health who had drowned himself in Lake Eola. Historians only knew about his tragic death when they opened the time capsule.

Someone came back later

What was supposed to be a relatively boring university time capsule went in a very different direction. The University of Washington sealed this box in 1956 with textbooks, newspapers, photographs, recordings, and other material from its communications program. But that’s not what researchers found when they opened it in 2007.

No, they found copies of Playboy, other adult magazines, men’s underwear, a condom, and Twinkies. The university launched an investigation into what had happened. Turns out, several members of The Daily newspaper had opened the box around 1979 or the early 1980s. They’d put the magazines and other items inside as a joke.

The ritual stayed hidden for generations

There was something quite disturbing inside the time capsule from Mankato Normal School in Minnesota. The cornerstone box was buried on June 22, 1869, and was eventually opened on May 3, 1968. The papers included a ritual for a group known as the Knights of the Forest.

This organization had been working toward removing Native Americans from the state, and the surviving records specifically documented the removal of the nearby Ho-Chunk people. It was such an important piece of history that it entered Minnesota State University, Mankato’s archives.

History is full of traditions that authorities tried to erase, only for people to continue them behind closed doors, in remote places, or disguised as something else.
