Lawyer at Perkins loses job

A Seattle-based lawyer was let go from the law firm Perkins Coie after making posts critical of Kirk online shortly after his death. Although the original post had been deleted when it made news, screenshots of it had been widely distributed. The firm later said it had received backlash from clients over the post.

Texas Fire/EMS Responder fired after Facebook post

Danielle Marie Meyers was a Fire/EMS responder for Canyon Lake, Texas. She lost her job after making a Facebook post critical of Kirk. The department that she worked for said that her response would undermine the public trust necessary for first responders to do their jobs.

New Mexico campus security guard fired

Eastern New Mexico University–Roswell fired a campus security guard after he made a negative post about Kirk’s killing. In a statement, the university said that someone with security duties for their students could not be seen as anything less than neutral.

California school district employee suspended

An employee for the Las Virgenes Unified School District in Calabasas, California, was put on administrative leave after making comments about Kirk’s assassination. During the investigation, district leaders stressed that staff members are held to high standards of conduct, even on personal social media accounts.

The Laredo Independent School District (ISD) and United ISD of Laredo, Texas, are investigating about 180 teachers who are suspected of having celebrated Kirk’s death on social media. While most of them did not get fired, a few of the teachers under investigation were disciplined for their posts online.

Westchester County school safety officer suspended

A school safety officer for the Westchester County, New York, school district was suspended after social media posts following Kirk’s killing that officials deemed glorified violence. “A person charged with protecting the safety of our students must maintain the trust and neutrality that position requires,” officials said in a statement.
