Some homes feel full of stories and activity, while others contain a few telltale signs that life has become extremely predictable.
The showroom sofa
The couch looks like it arrived yesterday even though it’s five years old. The cushions are perfectly aligned, there are never blankets tossed over the arm, and no one would ever eat pizza on it. A lived-in home usually accumulates some signs of life.
If preserving furniture becomes more important than using it, guests may begin to question whether they are allowed to sit down at all.
Guest-bathroom towels
They’re folded nicely, perfectly matched, and completely off limits to touch. Everyone has to dig around elsewhere to find the plain towel.
Who knew decorative towels could take something as functional as a towel and make it into a no-touching item. If your bathroom towels have more boundaries than some relationships, maybe home life has gotten too structured.
The special-occasion cabinet
They have 40 gorgeous plates and glasses tucked away for a special occasion. Guess what year the last special occasion was? 1998. In the meantime, they eat off of four everyday plates.
There is nothing wrong with protecting heirlooms, but hoarding everything for someday can become obsessive. Everyday can be a special occasion, like having people you enjoy around your table.
Remote-control headquarters
One changes channels on the television. Another adjusts the volume on the sound system. No one can recall what the third one does, and the fourth belongs to something that was discarded six years ago. All four still sit meticulously placed on the coffee table.
A table full of useless remotes almost serves as archaeological evidence of nights spent improving the entertainment system without actually improving the night itself.
Inspirational décor overload
“LIVE. LAUGH. LOVE.” The kitchen says “EAT.” The bedroom reminds you to “DREAM.” Somewhere, a wooden sign explains that “HOME” is where the heart is.
One positive reminder sign is fine. When you need a laminated instruction sheet before entering each room telling you how you should feel, your house feels less cozy and more generic. Good homes reflect their owners’ uniqueness without signage hanging from every wall.
The permanent puzzle table
It began as something fun to do on the weekend. Three weeks later, 847 pieces continue to crowd half of the dining room table while everyone else eats around them. Nobody seems too motivated to complete it, yet nobody is permitted to put it away either.
Puzzles are fun, but if your incomplete panorama has become part of the furniture, you may have exhausted your weekend activity options.
A mug for everything
There are enough mugs in the house to caffeinate a small convention. That is considering there are only two people who live here. Some have inspirational sayings. Some were souvenirs from vacations taken 15 years ago. At least six have some variation on “I need coffee before I can deal with humans”.
The sad part is, nothing new has been acquired in many years. They’re just a testament to a previously fun life.
The familiar dinner drawer
Friday dinner is pizza. Saturday is Chinese. Then they rotate through the same choices in the same order every week. The menus have since evolved into apps on phones, but they keep the tradition alive.
It’s totally fine to have favorite restaurants. But when you know your order so well that the restaurant practically knows it’s you before knowing your name or address, trying new foods might not be your family’s forte.
The all-business calendar
Their calendar is well-organized, with dentist appointments, oil changes, meetings, and grocery shopping. But there is no concert, dinner with friends, weekend getaway, or even random happy plans in the foreseeable future.
Adults have responsibilities, sure. But if every future block of time is just reminding you of another responsibility, maybe you should schedule something you actually want to do.
The forgotten home gym
The treadmill came in a wave of inspiration and was, for a short time, the promise of a new life. Now it serves as home to three shirts, a pair of jeans, and something that needs ironing.
Exercise equipment makes great expensive furniture because it’s shaped just right for hanging stuff on. The ironic thing is, everyone swears they will start using it “next week.”
The untouchable collection
Perhaps it’s tiny spoons, china dogs, commemorative plates, model cars, or souvenir thimbles. Either way, the collection fills an impeccably cared-for cabinet which is subject to strict rules: don’t touch, don’t move, and don’t ask why there are 73 of anything.
Collecting can be an admirably captivating hobby. But sometimes a collection ventures into bizarre territory and goes from a labor of love to hours spent Saturday afternoon dusting stuff no one can use.
Permanent TV noise
No one is watching it. Someone is cooking, someone else is on their phone, and the TV has been having conversations with itself for three hours. It has become white noise of the household.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with relaxing in front of your favorite show, but if silence has become so uncomfortable that you need a screen to create consistent white noise, watching for entertainment might have slowly morphed into a habit with no one actually enjoying it.
