Why I Threw Out Half My Stuff and Kept These 11 Essentials

If you’re anything like me then you know just how irritating it is to have clutter all over your house. It feels like your belongings own you instead of the other way around! As such, that’s why I decided to make a big change—I got rid of half of everything I owned. It wasn’t easy saying goodbye to so many things but I felt incredibly free once I did. Even so, there were some items I couldn’t part with. Here are eleven things that I simply couldn’t bear to toss and why they were so important to me. You might want to hang onto these too if you ever do a big clearout!

Dependable Laptop

Even though my laptop might not be the newest model on the market, it has been rock-solid for me. It runs well & has all my favorite programs set up just the way I like them—so why would I get rid of it? Really, upgrading seemed unnecessary when this one does everything I need and it would’ve been more of a hassle than it’s worth to find something new.

Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Everyone knows how important staying hydrated is and my stainless steel water bottle makes it easy. It’s tough & keeps my drinks cold for hours while also helping me cut down on single-use plastic. Yes, it might seem like a small thing but it has had a positive impact on my daily habits so letting it go didn’t make any sense. Instead, it stayed right where it was and it allows me to continue staying on top of my water intake.

My Trusty Cast-Iron Skillet

My well-worn cast-iron skillet has been the heart of my kitchen for years and it has the perfect seasoning from making countless meals. It doesn’t matter if I’m sizzling up crispy bacon or flipping pancakes on a lazy Sunday morning because this skillet does it all & I wouldn’t want it any other way. I thought about replacing it during my decluttering spree—but nothing else could compare. You really can’t put a price on all that flavor.

Worn-In Hiking Boots

I have a pair of hiking boots that have been with me on so many adventures, carrying me over miles of trails & up towering peaks. As a result, they’ve molded perfectly to my feet. Even though they’re a bit scuffed up & definitely show their age, any new boots wouldn’t feel the same—especially since each scratch & mark reminds me of a hiking story. Where else would I find boots that did exactly that?

My Grandmother’s Quilt

The quilt my grandmother handmade decades ago is another thing I value quite a bit. It’s warm & cozy which makes it perfect for snuggling up on chilly nights with a good book or watching movies on the couch. As I was sorting through my stuff, I knew this quilt wasn’t going anywhere. It’s a piece of my family’s story that I hold close to my heart. Would you really get those same feelings of nostalgia from a simple blanket?

Reliable Travel Backpack

On countless trips, I’ve used my favorite backpack because it’s sturdy & has just the right number of pockets to keep everything organized. Beyond that, it also fits comfortably no matter how much I stuff into it! I did consider replacing it. But then I thought to myself, why fix what isn’t broken? It’s never let me down & I know exactly how to pack it for maximum efficiency. I probably wouldn’t be able to do the same with a new backpack.

We all have one of those books that we’ve read more times than we can count—you know what I’m talking about. The one with pages that are worn thin and doodles scribbled in the margins from different times in your life. This is the book I turn to when I need comfort or just want to revisit familiar stories. As a result, tossing it felt completely wrong.

Noise-Canceling Headphones

I can’t imagine where I’d be without my noise-canceling headphones because they help me tune out the world when I’m working in noisy coffee shops or trying to relax on a long flight. I’ll sometimes just stick them on when I want some peace & quiet at home! Letting them go would’ve meant losing that little bubble of calm I can create whenever I need it. You really don’t know how valuable that is until it’s gone.

Handy Multi-Tool

My multi-tool has come to the rescue more times than I can remember! Whether it’s tightening a loose screw on my bike or opening stubborn packages, carrying it keeps me prepared for those little fixes that pop up unexpectedly. Getting rid of it wasn’t practical. And really, it’s one of those things you don’t realize how much you use until you think about not having it.

My Bicycle

Speaking of my bike, mine isn’t anything fancy yet it’s perfect for getting around town. It’s reliable & low-maintenance enough to give me a sense of freedom whenever I hop on. By keeping it, I can enjoy the outdoors without spending money on gas or dealing with traffic. Parting with it wasn’t really an option for me and I’m so pleased that I kept it.

Digital Camera

Even though I have a smartphone with quite a good camera, my digital camera still holds a special place in my heart since it lets me be more intentional with my photography. Just using it feels more purposeful than snapping quick shots on my phone. As a result, keeping it was an easy decision—I still love taking it out to capture moments that matter.
